The season is off to a start with a banger episode, introducing a younger version of Yuri, Rin, and Yukio’s mother. This episode is mostly centered around how Yuri spent her life as a child and how she came across Shiro. As for our protagonists, we see Rin Okamura traveling back into the past and coming across Mephisto, who acts as his guide throughout.

Back Where It All Started

Meeting Yuri And Shiro

The episode starts off with Rin Okumura arriving 40 years in the past and seeing a younger father, Shiro Fujimoto, as well as another version of Mephisto. One thing to note is that animation is as remarkable as ever, and the character designs are absolutely amazing. The effort the studio put into character detailing, especially Mephisto, is truly commendable.

As Rin and Mephisto meet, the latter explains that he is here to guide him but also warns Rin that this particular tale will end in tragedy and he best remember that. Just a few seconds later, Rin encounters a younger Yuri in a state of extreme poverty. This is when Mephisto warns Rin that he should not meddle with the people of the past. While it won’t cause a time paradox, it will lead to confusion.

Now, what he means by that is not exactly known, it might imply that Rin had intentions of changing something in the past. Even though Yuri seemed to be living as a homeless person, she seemed happy as she had found her family, including a bunch of other homeless people as well as an Obaba with a missing eye.

Introduction Of Satan

As the homeless people are having a conversation, we learn about Yuri playing with a blue fireball, to which Obaba answers that it is actually a Rinka, also known as Souls of the Dead and even Hellfire. Now Mephisto forwards time a bit, and we see Yuri playing with Rinka who is actually Satan.

What’s heartbreaking is that Satan actually ends up burning the place Yuri was staying at, which results in the death of her founding family as well.

This scene also does a great job of portraying what homeless people go through on a daily basis. Even after their tragic deaths, they still get disrespected. The adorable Yuri, after a lot of suffering, stumbles upon Shiro’s small hideout, marking the first time they meet.

Getting Sent To The Asylum

Suddenly, a few exorcists barge into the tiny hideout and start questioning Shiro. They also find Yuri and decide to take both of them to the asylum, which is actually the Exorcist Academy. This is because Yuri is also able to see the Demonic Black Dog that the exorcists brought with them.

As the episode concludes, we see a heartbreaking flashback where Rin exclaims how he used to be a troublesome kid and had no one besides Yukio and Shiro. So, while Rin still had some people to get by, his mother had no one, which made him extremely sad. Yuri is then set to become an exorcist at the exorcist cram school.

Final Thoughts

If the first episode is looking this promising, we can only imagine how good the rest of the season would be. The animation is an absolute eye candy, and the character designs, especially those of Mephisto, Yuri, and Shiro, are well done.

The opening Tsukaku by Amazarashi is an absolute banger, and the ending song, as well as the visuals are beautiful and serene yet heartbreaking. As Mephisto said, this might end tragically but we are so ready for what Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga has in store for us.
