Sonic Is Getting A Retro My Arcade Mini Cabinet

Sonic Is Getting A Retro My Arcade Mini Cabinet

Summary

  • My Arcade has shared the first images of a Sonic the Hedgehog mini cabinet it’s been working on.
  • The teaser pics are close-ups of the cabinet which means the finer details about it are unclear right now.
  • A full reveal is coming at CES 2025 this week which will hopefully include what games will be playable on it.

2024 was one of the busiest years for Sonic in recent memory. However, just because we’ve now turned the corner into 2025 that doesn’t mean we have to stop celebrating the Blue Blur and his supporting cast. My Arcade appears to be among the first committing to keeping that momentum going as it has teased the addition of a Sonic the Hedgehog edition to its collection of retro mini cabinets.

My Arcade shared some close-up images of the cabinet at the end of last week, teasing that it will get a full reveal during CES 2025. Hopefully that means we don’t have long to wait to learn more. CES begins tomorrow, January 7, and runs through the rest of the week, meaning we could get a proper look at the cabinet and what exactly it will include any time from tomorrow.

If you’re unfamiliar with My Arcade’s work, you might be fooled into thinking the Sonic cabinet it’s preparing for a full reveal at CES this week is a full-sized one. That’s unlikely since, as highlighted Sonic Stadium, My Arcade is best known for its mini cabinets, and I mean mini. A little further down in this article you’ll find examples of some of its previous work, the teaser images of the Sonic cabinet strongly suggesting its design will be similar to the previously released Pac-Man machine.

My Arcade Has Teased An Upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog Mini Cabinet

The Cabinet Will Get A Full Reveal During CES This Week

The close-up of the Sonic cabinet shows that it has a single jump button next to a joystick which looks a lot like the panel on which the controls for the Pac-Man cabinet can be found. That, and seemingly the upcoming Sonic one, is so small that the controls for its games are on a panel that juts out the front of the tiny machines. The ridges on the side under the jump button further suggest My Arcade’s Sonic cabinet will be a reskinned version of its Pac-Man one.

What won’t be the same as the Pac-Man cabinet is the design. The teaser images show that the Sonic machine will be decked out in Green Hill Zone colors, that being one of the things suggesting the games included on the cabinet will be limited to the original 2D Sonic games from the early 1990s. That there’s only one button with the joystick all but confirms that since most other Sonic games have required more than one button to play them.

Retro gamers will want to pay close attention to My Arcade throughout CES week, even if you don’t want a tiny Sonic cabinet to play the OG games on. The retro gaming company has also been working with Atari to help it create the Gamestation Go. Atari’s upcoming handheld device was re-revealed last week and will be showcased at CES later this week.
