  • The game marked a gameplay shift towards action, departing from survival horror roots.
  • Fans anticipate Capcom’s future releases, hopeful for a Resident Evil 5 remake and more surprises.

Capcom has been on a roll lately with its remakes of the beloved Resident Evil series, especially with the announcement that Resident Evil 4 has recently surpassed 9 million copies sold since its launch. Sales for Resident Evil 4 were likely spurred on by the release of the Resident Evil Gold Edition from February 2023 and an iOS release of the remake at the tail end of 2023.

The success of the iconic horror game should come as no surprise to players since Resident Evil 4 hit the milestone for 8 million copies sold just recently. Released in March 2023, the remake of the 2005 hit title follows Leon S. Kennedy as he works against a secret cult to rescue Ashley Graham, the president’s daughter. The series marked a huge departure in gameplay, turning it more into an action experience and away from its survival horror roots.

Resident Evil 4’s Milestones Just Don’t Stop Coming

Since Resident Evil 4’s release, it has quickly claimed the title of the fastest-selling Resident Evil series, according to Alex Aniel, author of the Resident Evil fan book Itchy, Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil. To put it into perspective, Resident Evil Village had only sold 500,000 copies by the time the game entered its eighth quarter.

Given the success of the series, and of Resident Evil 4 in particular, fans are looking forward to the next iteration of games from Capcom. Many fans are hoping that a remake of Resident Evil 5 will come next, and it’s not necessarily too soon for such an announcement, considering that the releases of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes were just over a year apart. But there are plenty of other games in the Resident Evil series that could receive a modern makeover, like Resident Evil 0 or even Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, both of which have major implications for the overall story of the games. And, of course, a Resident Evil 9 announcement wouldn’t disappoint either.
