Overlooked, super realistic FPS Arma Reforger is finally blowing up on Steam

Arma Reforger may not have enjoyed the success of the rest of Bohemia Interactive’s military sim series, but it looks like the game is finally having its moment. With some of the best gun effects and tactical gameplay in the industry, now is the perfect time to give Reforger a shot, whether you’re an Arma die-hard or coming to the series for the first time. More people are playing Arma Reforger than ever, and hopefully it just keeps growing.

When Arma Reforger launched in 2022, it didn’t find its stride. Daily playercounts on Valve’s platform very quickly dropped to less than 500, while its predecessor Arma 3 was regularly pulling in over 20,000 concurrents in that same timeframe. Since the tail end of 2024, however, Arma Reforger has been having a resurgence. Player counts in the war game have shot up into five figures, with the latest peak as of Sunday January 5 being 12,547. Reforger is having its moment, and it could keep getting bigger.

Arma Reforger player numbers

Arma Reforger came to PS5 and introduced crossplay on Thursday December 12, 2024, and this is exactly when it started blowing up on Steam. While we don’t have console numbers, it’s clear that a new audience is playing Reforger, and this has incentivized even more new and old players alike to come back to Bohemia Interactive’s realistic military sim.

It’s not just crossplay either, as Bohemia also added some new content to Arma Reforger on the same day it came to PS5. Soviet and US factions can now equip suppressors on assault rifles, adding an entirely new dimension to combat. Grass render distance has also been extended, and the server queue system has also gotten a lot better. Reforger has been out of early access for a while, but there’s still going to be a lot of patches coming down the line.

Arma Reforger launched in a bit of a weird place, and this is more than likely why it’s taken so long to find its feet. It’s the first Arma game running on the Enfusion engine, and Bohemia is using it as a sort of bridge and test-bed for when it finally releases Arma 4.
