Often, successful live services launch to a huge playerbase, which will see a sudden drop off shortly after release. Then, it all becomes about clinging onto those hardcore fans who login every day, or maybe trying out new events that bring back those who fell off.
However, in Marvel Rivals‘ case, it looks like the launch period hype isn’t dying down. Over on Steam, the shooter is still pulling in huge figures, only seeing a roughly ten percent drop off since it launches exactly one month ago.
Marvel Rivals Shows No Sign Of Slowing Down
Even during quiet periods, Marvel Rivals is comfortably pulling in around 200k concurrent players on Steam alone
Over on SteamDB, we can see how Marvel Rivals is performing since its launch on December 6. As we can see on the graph, there’s hardly been much of a dip at all. In the past 24 hours, it’s peaked at more than 400,000 players logging in at once on PC, compared to an all-time peak of 480,000.
We’ll have to wait and see if Marvel Rivals can keep going strong like this. Other successful 2024 live services, Helldivers 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, began to see their player bases fall after their first month, albeit slowly. Both are still performing well, but quite far off from their launch day success.
Of course, Marvel Rivals is free-to-play, which may make things more difficult. At least with a premium game, the upfront cost might lock you in for a while. Marvel Rivals, on the other hand, will have to keep players hooked through a mix of its gameplay and monetisation. And despite how frustrating its battle pass can be, it at least doesn’t time out on us, locking us into playing when we don’t want to.
