In Hyper Light Breaker, the player and their allies are tasked with defeating the Abyss King, a powerful force threatening the Overgrowth—and re-threatening it, every time the player enters a new procedurally generated world. But the Abyss King does not work alone; he sends out his Crowns, powerful boss enemies that Hyper Light Breaker‘s players must face before they can confront the King himself.
In a conversation with Game Rant, the Hyper Light Breaker team explained how players will be required to challenge Crowns before eventually being able to make their way to the Abyss King. Each Crown will have a unique design and combat style to keep players on their toes. The team also teased two Crowns available to fight in the Early Access version of Hyper Light Breaker, as well as how the Abyss King will make his presence felt throughout the world.
NOTE: The Abyss King Boss Battle will not be available at Early Access launch.
Hyper Light Breaker’s Early Access Will Feature Two Crowns To Battle
Before Hyper Light Breaker’s players can reach the Abyss King, they will need to challenge his Crowns. The goal of each Cycle will be to take on three Crowns when the game is fully released, opening the path to the Abyss King. During its Early Access launch, there will be two Crown bosses for players to fight.
Dro
The first is Dro, a blindfolded wolf who is described by lead producer Michael Clark as “wield[ing] a gnarly sword.” Dro is a highly mobile boss who will “leap and slash and stomp” around the arena. When her health becomes too low, she begins sending out swarms of projectiles; Clark compared this phase of the fight to a “bullet hell” game.
Exus
The second of the two Early Access Crowns is named Exus, and he will use a variety of fire-based attacks to strike down players. Clark described Exus’s attack pattern as such: “filling his arena with flaming whirlwinds as he dash-punches players and flings fireballs.”
The Abyss King’s Influence Will Be Felt In Early Access
The Abyss King himself will not be available to fight when Hyper Light Breaker first launches. However, that does not mean that players can safely traverse the world free from his influence. He will become aware of players’ actions as they grow stronger and challenge and defeat his Crowns, and this power-hungry conqueror will not take such a threat lightly. Clark explained what will happen once Early Access players have attracted the notice of the Abyss King:
“You’ll feel his presence throughout each Cycle as drawing his attention will result in him flinging meteors down on the world, dropping groups of enemies on the player, and dispatching powerful assassins that hunt you across the map.”
Hyper Light Breaker’s combination of open-world and roguelike gameplay means that players will have to explore diverse biomes, fight many monsters, including the Crowns, and collect a variety of gear and upgrades before they are worthy of challenging the Abyss King. Though still in many ways shrouded in mystery, this conquering figure promises to be a true threat that will put players’ skills to the test. From facing his meteors and assassins in Early Access to ultimately taking him on as a boss when he is added to the game, Hyper Light Breaker’s players will need to do everything they can to truly defeat the Abyss King.
