While a lot of NieR: Automata will focus on the war between Androids and Machines, there are still other things to see and do around the world, many of which are less violent. Fishing is one optional activity that can be completely skipped over during a playthrough should you wish.
While it may not help you level up, fishing can be a very easy way of finding rare items and making money fast without spending other resources while fighting machines. Here’s how to fish in NieR: Automata and what to do with the things you get from this pass time.

How To Fish In NieR: Automata
Fishing can be done any time when standing in just about any body of water, even if it’s just ankle-deep like the water outside of the Resistance Camp. When you fully stand still in water, the button to begin fishing will appear over your character’s head, and holding it down will have them sit back and be able to cast their pod to fish. Fishing is only done with one button, to cast out your pod and reel it in:
- O on PlayStation
- B on Xbox
- Enter on PC
Once your pod has been cast into the water, it will sit and wait until something starts to nibble on the bait. You may see the pod bob up and down, but don’t reel in yet. You’re waiting for the pod to fully be pulled underwater and make an audible plopping sound before quickly pressing the real in button. You’ll only have about a second to react, otherwise, the fish will get away and you’ll need to recast. You can cast and recast as often as you like with no restrictions, so fish to your heart’s content to get as many fish or junk items as you’d like.
You can get a plug-in chip that makes a fishing icon appear in the top right of the screen whenever you are standing in a body of water that can be fished in.

Rewards For Fishing In NieR: Automata
Whether you’re fishing in a pond or the sewer, just about all the fish or junk items you get from fishing can be sold for good money. This is the safest and a fairly quick method for getting money fast early on, especially for those trying to upgrade their plug-in chip maximum capacity. If you decide to fish in a sewer, there is a chance you get the Iron Pipe, which can be one of the better weapons in the game depending on how lucky you are.
