- Elden Ring Nightreign, a co-op spinoff, will be released in 2025.
One Elden Ring fan has challenged themselves with what most would say is an impossible task: defeating Messmer without getting hit every day until Nightreign releases. The new title was revealed at last year’s The Game Awards, coming as quite a surprise considering developer FromSoftware’s past comments regarding the franchise. To build up hype, and presumably get some practice in, one fan will be defeating Elden Ring‘s Messmer until Nightreign is released in 2025.
Players are already preparing to celebrate the third anniversary of Elden Ring, though the game has never once seemed to lose its spot in popular culture. Revered for its richly detailed world, as well as its frustratingly difficult yet satisfying combat, Elden Ring ushered in a new age for FromSoftware, a developer that already had multiple global hits under its belt. Despite keeping the same combat and exploration systems present in previous titles, Elden Ring put players in an unforgiving open-world setting, giving them the freedom to go where they please. The release of Elden Ring was hyped since its first reveal trailer, though this excitement has yet to die down, with a spinoff, Elden Ring: Nightreign, now on the horizon.

YouTuber chickensandwich420 has announced their new self-imposed challenge of defeating Messmer every single day until Elden Ring Nightreign releases. While the consistency is a challenge in itself, the player will also be completing the fight “hitless,” meaning they will be taking no damage. Messmer the Impaler is one of many bosses included in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and is considered one of the game’s hardest fights. A hitless run is nothing new for Elden Ring and the rest of the FromSoftware fandom, but considering how many times the player will have to do the battle, the challenge is more of an endurance test than anything.
Elden Ring Fan Fighting Messmer Every Day Until Nightreign Releases
Challenge runs have become a core part of the FromSoftware experience, with fans coming up with incredibly difficult and seemingly impossible tasks to complete. Standard challenge runs often ask players to defeat bosses, or even complete entire games hitless, with one managing to complete the entire FromSoftware catalog while taking no damage. The creativity in FromSoftware’s world and boss design has translated into the complexity of these runs, with plenty more sure to come when Nightreign drops.
As stated earlier, Elden Ring Nightreign‘s announcement came out of nowhere, with news of the game first officially dropping at The Game Awards 2024. Developers had previously gone on record saying that Shadow of the Erdtree was the end of the road for Elden Ring content and that there were no plans to develop a sequel. However, Nightreign appears to be a fun way for the world and the characters of Elden Ring to live on with a new focus on co-op content. The game does not yet have an official release date, but Nightreign is expected to drop sometime in 2025.
