It’s hard to pick the best level in Battlefield 3‘s peerless campaign. I like the first full mission, with the gunfight in the parking lot and the sniper, but the two levels where you play as the Spetznaz, first in Paris, then in the (extremely destructible) coastal villa are spectacular. The huge battle to capture the bank is another high point, but in terms of sheer tension, atmosphere, and fear factor, I think the prize belongs to the setpiece dogfight mission Going Hunting. I could write an entire article about why this is so good, but it turns out the level’s playable character, Hawkins, originally had a bigger role in Battlefield 3. In fact, the campaign’s lead designer now shares details on two whole missions that were cut before launch.
The Bad Company spin-off series and Battlefield 1 are still renowned, but the best game in the entire FPS series – both for its campaign and its multiplayer – remains Battlefield 3. David Goldfarb, whose more recent credits include beloved demonic shooter Metal Hellslinger, served as lead designer for BF3’s single-player mode. Responding to a variety of posts reminiscing about the campaign, Goldfarb shares details on missions that ultimately didn’t make the final cut.
“Sometimes I forget we made this and it’s nice to be reminded other people liked it,” Goldfarb remarks about Battlefield 3’s campaign. “I just found some notes. There were two cut missions. One was Hawkins getting captured and the second was Dima [the playable Spetznaz agent in both the Paris and villa levels] meeting up with her.”
Goldfarb says that the level where Hawkins is shot down and captured had to be cut, but admits it “would have been a cool one.” The lead designer also says that personally Battlefield 3 remains the “hardest” project he’s worked on.

“Humbled by the outpouring of love for BF3,” Goldfarb writes. “The hardest project of them all – for me anyway. Personally very difficult, and felt like I didn’t do a good job with a lot of it. Never felt as good about it as I did Bad Company 2. Appreciate all the kindness, comes at a time when it is needed.
“The weirdest, sweetest thing about this thread is how everyone insisted no-one cared about BF3’s single player, and yet, to so many of you, it seems to have meant a lot. Thanks for that, too.”
Goldfarb previously shared some thoughts on Battlefield Bad Company 3, and how the hypothetical game might look if it ever came to fruition. However, the designer also affirms that he is committed to his current studio and a project that is in development.
