AMD Ryzen AI Max Strix Halo announced as PS5-beating gaming laptop CPU



AMD has finally officially unvieled its incredible new gaming laptop CPU, the AMD Ryzen AI Max. Long rumored using the codename Strix Halo, the new CPU contains a colossal integrated GPU that, at least on paper, is more powerful than the one in the PS5 and has more than double the GPU performance of the Intel Core Ultra 9 288V.

The new AMD CPU has just been unveiled at CES, and will no doubt be finding its way into the best gaming laptop designs of the world will also contain a massive 16 CPU cores, along with an NPU capable of 50TOPs for AI processing, for massive overall compute power, all from a single piece of silicon.

We first saw really solid evidence of the AI Max’s power when strong Strix Halo rumors started circulating, revealing its 40 CU GPU and 16 CPU cores. That’s even more compute units than the 32 found in AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 desktop graphics cards.

The new processor will also be available in various other configurations with as few as six CPU cores and 16 graphics compute units. The top tier chip is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 16 CPU cores running at up to 5.1GHz and 50 GPU compute units.

Next up is the Ryzen AI Max 390 with 12 CPU cores and 32 GPU CUs, followed by the Ryzen AI Max 385 with eight CPU cores and 32 GPU CUs. Finally, there’s the business-focused Ryzen AI Max Pro 380 with six cores and a 16-CU GPU.

The new Ryzen AI Max Strix Halo range will be available in new gaming laptops from Q1 2025, so we won’t have long to wait to try these stunning new processors.

The new chip was unveiled during AMD’s CES 2025 keynote where the company also unveiled new Ryzen 9 9950X3D desktop CPUs, new Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards, and a new AMD Ryzen Z 2 Extreme gaming handheld mobile CPU.
