When The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker launched all the way back in 2003s, its iconic cel-shading artstyle divided fans. However, over the years, it’s gained a cult following, particularly among those who are nostalgic for this GameCube classic.
Now, a Zelda fan is recreating the entirety of Hyrule in this artstyle. Wind Waker: Unflooded is a 3D modelling project that, as the name would suggest, removes all of the water from the Wind Waker map. This gives the project’s creator, Joe Kendrick, the space to create iconic locations in Hyrule, using the aesthetic of the base game – and the results are looking fantastic.
Wind Waker: Unflooded Shares New Year Progress Update
The project is around 65 percent complete, with plenty to show off
Kendrick talks us through how the project is coming along in a video shared on January 1. Here, we also get a look at how Hyrule is being re-imagined with Wind Waker’s aesthetic, showing it all in a new light.
We see a lot of locations and areas that are in development, but one of the most eye-catching actually comes from a piece of concept art for Wind Waker. As it turns out, the devs considered including an island that was shaped like a Game Cube, but this never made it into the final game. Now, Wind Waker: Unflooded has a little nod to this, with a statue of a Game Cube within a mountain.
There are a bunch of other videos on the channel to check out if you want to see more locations included in the map. It’s a huge undertaking, taking several years and compiling the work of a bunch of contributors. It’s well worth keeping an eye on if you’re a fan of Wind Waker, or even just a fan of the series in general who wants to see what Hyrule would look like if it was all in one map.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was a divisive game upon release, as the cartoon-style graphics disgruntled some fans.
However, the game is today considered one of the franchise’s best entries, and the visuals have held up exceptionally well. Aside from the visuals, the game’s standout feature is its sailing.
