Vaas Montenegro (Far Cry 3)
A Crazy Pirate Who Entraps Players With His Performance
- Released
-
November 29, 2012
There are many reasons why Far Cry 3 was hailed as one of the greatest open-world games ever made, with Vaas himself becoming one of the best villains of the entire Far Cry series. This sadistic pirate was a wild card who could go completely ballistic at the drop of a hat, keeping players on the edge of their seats whenever he addressed Jason and his friends.
His wild antics can be hard to watch at times, but Michael Mando’s performance is so hypnotizing that fans can’t help but be drawn in by his aggressive charisma. He is genuinely scary when angered, and fans will breathe a sigh of relief when they move on — only to miss his overbearing presence in the first half of Far Cry 3.

Ganondorf (Tears Of The Kingdom)
Watching His Health Bar Stretch Beyond The Bounds Of Reason Is A Special, Horrifying Moment
Tears of the Kingdom can be pretty scary when players have to tackle massive Gleeoks and Armored Lynels, but nothing comes close to the final fight against Ganondorf. Not only is this boss fight way more challenging than the ending of Breath of the Wild, but his second phase shatters fan expectations when his health bar doesn’t stop growing.
The intensity of his attacks, coupled with the Gloom debuff, ensure that players must be stocked up with a bunch of restoratives to even have a chance of beating this tough foe. It’s genuinely scary to see this iconic Legend of Zelda boss bear down on the player, with the final phase turning him into an actual dragon that must be fought in an epic set-piece before Zelda and Link can reunite once again.

Bowser (Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury)
A Kaiju Who Causes Players To Panic Whenever He Becomes Enraged
Bowser is one of the most iconic villains in gaming history, but most players agree that he’d never really been scary in any of his video game appearances. This sentiment changed with the advent of Bowser’s Fury, an open-world expansion of Super Mario 3D World that is a blast to explore.

Players will never be truly safe in this game, since Bowser is an enduring threat throughout the experience who can awaken to torment Mario at random. It’s a horrifying moment to see this massive kaiju Bowser close the distance to Mario while the player is struggling to run away, leading to a death that players are willing to suffer — so long as they don’t have to deal with the imposing threat of Fury Bowser for a little while.

Gaunter O’Dimm (The Witcher 3)

Mighty
Hearts of Stone is one of the greatest expansions released for a video game, introducing an iconic villain who is quite sinister. Gaunter O’Dimm is a malicious entity who ropes his victims into unfair agreements that force them to bend to his will. Both Geralt and Olgierd become his victims, trying their hardest to get out of this deal with the devil and resume a normal life.
Gaunter O’Dimm’s sinister aura is a huge part of what makes him such a scary villain to deal with in Hearts of Stone. Even if Geralt decides to stop the Man of Glass, he can’t lay a hand on this devil and must use a fair bit of trickery to beat the demon at his own game. O’Dimm can never truly die and is simply sent away for a few years before he’ll eventually come back and torment more innocent souls with his unfair contracts.

Killer Croc (Batman: Arkham Origins)
It’s Scary To See His Jaws Inch Closer To Tear Batman’s Face
- Released
-
October 25, 2013
Batman: Arkham Origins is an underrated entry in the series, with Batman having to take out eight assassins gunning for him on Christmas Eve. This leads to some spectacular boss fights, and Killer Croc is no exception.
He hits fast and hard, with other goons joining him midway through the battle. Easily the scariest part of this fight is when he forces players into a quicktime event where they must avoid his massive jaws from taking a good chunk out of Batman’s face, with the camera zooming in to emphasize the horror of this moment.

Far Cry 5 was a much-needed upgrade that went a long way in making the series relevant again. It helped that this game upped the ante for its villains by letting players interact with and take out the members of the Seed family in whatever manner they see fit.

2
Venom (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2)
An Alien Symbiote Who Tries To Ruin Peter Parker’s Life
Venom is often one of the scariest parts of a Spider-Man story whenever he’s introduced. His monstrous power is put on full display in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 during the battle against Kraven, where players control this monstrous symbiote firsthand as he beats and devours Kraven in a brutal turning point of the game.
For what it’s worth, every Symbiote entity has the potential to terrify the player, but Venom is in a class of his own, being one of Peter’s closest friends. Players may be invested in saving Harry, but it’s hard to conquer a nightmarish foe who looks incredibly scary and also holds an intense grudge against Spider-Man himself.

Joker (Batman: Arkham Knight)
Becomes The Most Compelling Part Of Arkham Knight Even Though He Isn’t Alive
- Released

June 23, 2015
- OpenCritic Rating

Mighty
It’s a testament to Mark Hamill’s alluring performance as the Joker that he managed to become the scariest and most compelling villain in Arkham Knight even though he was nothing more than a figment of Batman’s imagination. Even in death, the Dark Knight’s nemesis haunts him every step of the way.
The first-person sequences where Batman is unable to distinguish his hallucinations from reality contribute to some horrifying moments when players are bombarded with sudden jumpscares as Joker continues to mess with Batman. Most players will be thankful when the game reverts to normal after these sequences, allowing them to catch their breath and explore Gotham once again.
