2022 Open-World RPG May Be Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Summary

  • Gotham Knights may come to the Switch 2.
  • The 2022 open-world ARPG was previously rated for the Switch, but never actually landed on Nintendo’s first hybrid console.

Gotham Knights may be coming to the Switch 2, some newly surfaced evidence suggests. Were that to happen, Nintendo‘s unannounced console would mark the fourth platform on which Gotham Knights was released.

The Switch 2 is rumored to have entered mass production near the end of 2024, possibly as early as late September. This belief is substantiated by the recent uptick in hardware leaks describing or depicting the upcoming console. Switch 2 game leaks haven’t been nearly as prevalent throughout this period.

It Looks Like the Nintendo Switch 2 Console Leaks Are Real

One eagle-eyed fan presents a convincing argument for why the recently leaked real-life images of the Nintendo Switch 2 must have been real.

Be that as it may, Gotham Knights has just been identified as a potential Switch 2 title. This was done by YouTuber Doctre81 (via Universo Nintendo), who dug up a LinkedIn profile of a Polish game developer mentioning his contributions to optimizing two versions of the 2022 ARPG for “unreleased” platforms. Nintendo’s current-gen console is presumably one of the two systems, not least because a Switch version of Gotham Knights was rated all the way back in September 2023—even though it failed to materialize.

The other “unreleased” version of the game is speculated to be targeting Nintendo’s next console. Such a port could be somewhat straightforward to produce on account of Switch 2 being backward-compatible. Both mentions of the two unannounced versions of Gotham Knights were removed from the LinkedIn profile by the time Doctre81 reported on them in early January 2025.

Gotham Knights Switch Port Has Presumably Been Abandoned

Seeing how Gotham Knights even had performance issues on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, it’s plausible that its developers encountered difficulties in porting it to the significantly less powerful Switch. And given that it’s been more than two years since the game’s Switch rating emerged online, it’s possible this version of the open-world RPG has been abandoned in favor of a Switch 2 port.

Not too many titles have already been confirmed for the Switch 2, likely because Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its much-anticipated device. The list of games that are already known to be coming to the Switch successor includes open-world RPG My Time at Evershine and Persona-like RPG Bestiario. British studio Playtonic Games has also recently hinted at the remaster of its platformer Yooka-Laylee eyeing a Switch 2 release. Many more third-party titles are likely to be confirmed for the Switch successor as soon as the console is officially revealed. Nintendo has repeatedly said it intends to announce the device before the end of its current fiscal year, which runs until March 31. The Switch 2 thus isn’t expected to hit the store shelves before Q2 2025 at the earliest.
