Disney Lorcana’s first full year was a massive one. Four full-sized sets expanded the game with over 800 new cards, giving it one of the most rich and diverse metas in any TCG. We also got the first season of Disney Lorcana Challenge, which brought large-scale organized play to North America and Europe, raising the stakes with high-value prizing and increasing the game’s competitive level.

The Aggro “Diggy Diggy Hole” Deck You Need To Watch Up For At Lorcana Set Championships
Amber/Steel may not have been a big player at Disney Lorcana’s European Championship, but it’s becoming a big deal now.
Lorcana celebrated its first anniversary at D23 Expo with an exciting look at what’s to come in the years ahead. We now know the names of the first two sets in 2025 (Archazia’s Island and Reign of Jafar), as well as some of the featured films, which includes Bolt and The Black Cauldron. The rest of what Lorcana has in store for 2025 is still a mystery, so here’s our wishlist for the year ahead.
New And Improved Accessories
They say a TCG collection is only as good as the box you store it in. Well, no one actually says that, but players and collectors all agree that having nice accessories is a must. Unfortunately, Ravensburger hasn’t been able to offer a lot of high-quality Lorcana items so far.
The quality of the deck boxes and sleeves in particular have been a sore spot since the game launched in 2023, and we haven’t seen any improvements to either product over the last year. There is a new binder and deck box, produced by Ultra Pro, that launched in November, but they’re not on Amazon, Ravensburger’s website, or any of my local game stores. If a deck box falls in the woods…
In 2025, I’d love to get some high-quality sleeves, durable storage boxes, plastic lore counters, and other accessories to make playing the game easier and more fun.
Expanding Organized Play
I’m incredibly impressed by what Ravensburger accomplished with the Disney Lorcana Challenge series this year. Overall the events ran smoothly and offered high-level competition with worthwhile prizes. In 2025, I’d like to see organized play for Lorcana get bigger and better.
More events in bigger venues will give more players the opportunity to play, and given how quickly tickets sold out to each DLC in 2024, there’s plenty of demand. I’d love to see a youth division similar to the way Pokemon separates Juniors, Seniors, and Masters, to encourage more kids to play the game and compete on an even level. It would also be great to see some kind of expanded way to qualify for continentals and the world championship so that the most consistent and committed get to compete at the highest level.
Consistency is important, so in 2025, I hope that there is greater parity between the NA and EU events. Applying rules and policies evenly ensures the most fair experience for all players, no matter where they live. It would also be great to see more variety in side events and game modes at DLCs. We’re getting some new experiences at the North American Championship, so I’m hopeful.
Give Us Merch
As a huge Lorcana fan, I would love to rep the brand, but outside of a hat and shirt from the DLC prize wall, there’s no way to do that. There’s so much great artwork in Lorcana that would look incredible on shirts, jackets, shoes, hats, and socks. I’d love to see a merch booth at conventions and DLCs where players can gear up in Lorcana apparel.
Beyond clothes, there’s so much opportunity to Lorcana’s reimagined Disney characters. The parks should be full of plushies, posters, coffee cups, and Magic Bands featuring Winnie the Pooh, Hunny Wizard; Cinderella, Stouthearted; and Tinker Bell, Giant Fairy. Where are the pins? We need more pins!
It’s a great time to expand the brand beyond the TCG. There’s so much I want to learn about the story and the world of Lorcana that would make for great comic books, novels, and animated series. I understand not wanting to go too big too fast, but we need more Lorcana in 2025.
A Game-Changing Mechanic
When Locations were introduced in Into the Inklands, many wondered if we’d be getting big, game-changing mechanics every set. So far, every new mechanic since Locations has been one-and-done. We got Sing Together in Ursula Returns, followed by discard-to-shift and cost reduction characters in Shimmering Skies, then Azurite Sea introduced abilities that activate every time you add a card to your inkwell. What we haven’t gotten is a new card type, or a new keyword that really shakes up the game.
There are some hints that something big is coming in Archazia’s Island. Some think it will be dual-colored cards, but I’m hoping for a brand-new card type altogether. Lorcana’s gameplay hasn’t gotten stale yet, but there’s nothing more exciting than big new mechanics in a card game, and I can’t wait to see what Ravensburger is working on for 2025.
