Mankey

After Promo Mankey made the Genetic Apex Primeape a force to be reckoned with, the fresh versions found in Mythical Island have plenty to live up to. For Starters, Mankey has 50 HP, a Retreat Cost of one. It can also use Focus Fist, which has the potential to deal 50 damage for only one Energy.

Whether or not Mankey can pull off this Move depends on the result of a coin flip. This makes Mankey less reliable. Even if it manages to land a hit, it doesn’t always guarantee that you’ll get a clean knockout.

Primeape

The Primeape found in Mythical Island has a much more consistent attack than the one found in Genetic Apex. However, it doesn’t gain any buffs for taking damage. Instead, you get a solid 50 damage by using Punch for only one Energy.

Stonjourner

Stonjourner is an odd Pokemon that shares many parallels with Onix from Genetic Apex. It is a Basic Fighting Pokemon that can only start throwing hands once it has three Energy attached to it. It also has its fair share of differences that make it better.

This Pokemon has 120 HP, a cheaper Retreat Cost of three, and does 90 damage instead of Onix’s 70. The biggest difference is that Stonjourner cannot take advantage of Brock’s Energy Acceleration, making it a bit more difficult to set up properly. On the bright side, a Stonjourner on the Active Spot can act as a wall that can buy the rest of your Pokemon time to Evolve.

Getting into Golem still takes a bit of work, but luckily, the line is a bit sturdier in Mythical Island. Unfortunately, one of the weaker cardsins this line is Geodude, which requires two Energy before it can start attacking.

Graveler

Graveler’s biggest problem in Genetic Apex is that you jump from a Geodude that can attack with one Energy to a Graveler that needs three Energy if it wants to do anything. Mythical Island’s Graveler solves this problem by making its Move cost only two Energy.

While it cannot dish out 70 damage, it is better to have a Move that can be used sooner than one that leaves your Pokemon just sitting there. It is also a natural Evolution for Genetic Apex’s Geodude since it can attack for one additional Energy, making it have excellent flow between stages. If Evolved from Mythical Island’s Geodude, it does not require additional Energy to attack.

Golem

Mythical Island’s Golem gives Brock another target for Energy acceleration. While you still need to go through two Evolutions to get to Golem, the payoff is much better. For four Energy, Golem can use Guard Press to deal 120 damage. This is a decent amount of damage, but what really sells it is that instead of having recoil damage after the Move is used, it protects you instead.

Primeval Law doesn’t allow your opponent to Evolve their Active Pokemon. The only downside to this Ability is that most of the time, players will Evolve their Pokemon on the Bench unless they get a bad starting hand.

Taking Revenge For The Fallen

For two Energy, Marshadow can make your opponent’s Pikachu wish it hadn’t knocked out your Pokemon last turn. With 80 HP and a Retreat Cost of one, this is a Pokemon you want on your Bench waiting for the chance to strike hard.

Revenge does 40 base damage for two Energy. However, if any of your Pokemon are knocked out by attack damage, Revenge will do an additional 60 the next turn. This effect can be utilized in a variety of ways. In one scenario, your previous Active Pokemon is knocked out and Marshadow comes to even the odds. However, it can also get the damage buff if your opponent is sniping the Bench with Moves that can target any of your Pokemon.
