Even if you’ve never watched SnapCube’s Real-Time Fandub of Sonic Adventure 2, you’ve definitely heard one of the many, many jokes it’s spawned. Whether it’s Eggman missing his wife, urinating on the moon, or having his intimate photos leaked onto Twitter dot com, so many lines from this redub have a life of their own now.
However, some fans have come to resent this. It’s all come to a head now that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in cinemas, adapting Sonic Adventure 2‘s story. Some feel that this story has been undercut by how popular the fandub has become, while others see it as harmless fun.
Some Sonic Fans Are Getting A Little Annoyed By All The Fandub References

This latest discussion kicked off over the holidays when Twitter user @PKontwt said that the SnapCube video has done “irreparable damage to Sonic Adventure 2”. This got a lot of attention, sitting at around 10k likes at the time of writing, so she’s clearly not the only one who feels this way. And true enough, when many of us see that one frame of Eggman, we probably think of his iconic announcement speech before we think of the actual game.
However, others in a thread on Reddit disagree with this sentiment. “I don’t agree with the negativity on the SA2 fandub,” writes user PrinceARRON.
“Nah because this video probably boosted the awareness/player base for this game years after the game originally released,” says TheGhostlyMage.
Many others agree with this. “SA2 is one of my favourite games, and I love the Sonic fandubs so so much,” nrj6490 says.
However, even some fans of the video think it’s gotten a little out of hand. “It’s just kinda something that happens when something becomes popular, people start seeing that popular thing a lot and get sick of it and start to view it negatively because of its overuse,” replies BK1565. “I think the fandub is hilarious but even I get tired when I see it referenced repeatedly.”
Of course, we’ve recently seen how fandom inside jokes can be taken a bit too far. Some Sonic fans were planning to cheer when Maria dies in the new movie, and there’s at least one video going around of people doing just that. Most fans were pleading with the community not to do this though, since it can be pretty inconsiderate towards fellow movie-goers – or confusing for them, at the very least.
In any case, Sonic Adventure 2 isn’t hurting for popularity right now. Since Sonic 3 hit cinemas, the 2001 game has seen a player boost on Steam, so at least some people are experiencing the story as intended.
