Rumor: Nintendo Patent Hints at Important Switch 2 Feature

A new patent from Nintendo hints at a very important feature for the Switch 2 console, seeming to confirm previous reports about the system.

Posted by technology accessory company JSAUX on Twitter, this is for a new Split Transparent Ergonomic Protective Case. The case appears to fit some details about the Nintendo Switch 2’s appearance, specifically the handheld part and how the Joy-Cons will connect. JSAUX’s photo only shows the backside of the supposed Switch successor console, showing off the trigger buttons of the Joy-Con controllers, the back stand, power and volume buttons, along with fan ventilation.

Switch Leaks and Rumors Tease Possible Features

It should be noted there are already some questions about this particular image, as it appears to be based on a much older leak of the successor console from September 2024, specifically a 3D-printed mockup Switch 2 based on the leaked specs. In particular, the similarities between the image posted by JSAUX and the September 2024 leak are the SL/SR buttons being revised, along with a new release lever for the Joy-Con. As such, fans should take this image posted by JXAUX with a grain of salt.

One of the few confirmed aspects of the upcoming console is the Nintendo Switch 2’s backwards compatibility, where games previously released on the Switch will be playable on its successor. Additionally, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the Nintendo Switch Online service and accounts made for it will be brought over to the Switch 2. Fans will need to wait for the official announcement about the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.
