Mass Effect 5 Director Teases Paragon And Renegade Morality System

Mass Effect 5 Director Teases Paragon And Renegade Morality System

Summary

  • Mass Effect 5’s director mentions the paragon and renegade system on Twitter, sparking hope that they’ll be in the next game.
  • The director says we’ll have to “wait and see” if this system returns in Mass Effect 5.
  • He adds that renegade should be an option even if most players pick paragon.

When discussing the Mass Effect series with another fan, there’s a whole lot to talk about. But there will probably be two questions that you ask first: who did you romance, and were you more paragon or renegade?

So, it came as a surprise when Mass Effect: Andromeda did away with it entirely. Instead, we had four different personality types: emotional, logical, casual, and professional. However, we have no idea which kind of conversation and morality system will carry over into Mass Effect 5 – if any.

Nothing is confirmed just yet, but fans think the old morality system is coming back

This tease comes from Michael Gable, who’s worked at BioWare since 2009. Now, he’s leading the next Mass Effect game, which many of us are calling Mass Effect 5 until we get an official title reveal.

Gamble’s reference to the paragon and renegade system came in response to a fan discussion, as one person highlighted that significantly fewer players make their Shepard a renegade. “Yes, it’s true that more people played paragon,” says Gable. “But, it would have been meaningless if renegade had not existed. The ability to choose is stronger than the number of people playing any option, IMO.”

Some fans interpreted this as meaning that paragon and renegade were confirmed to be back in Mass Effect 5, but he clarified this is not the case – for now. “I was talking about the trilogy. You’ll just have to wait and see…”

At the very least, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out of the way now. We already know that The Veilguard isn’t getting any DLC so the team can focus on the next Mass Effect, so there’s a good chance of getting some details in 2025.
