Marvel Rivals‘ competitive mode brings an interesting twist to the ranking system with the introduction of the Chrono Shield, and it can be quite tricky to figure out what its purpose is at first. For players looking to know more about it, here is what they need to know.
Marvel Rivals features a competitive as well as a quick-play mode. Initially, players will need to reach level 10 before they are able to unlock the competitive mode, but once they are past that hurdle, they will be able to climb up the ranks in Marvel Rivals.

What is Chrono Shield?
Usually, in competitive games, when players lose a few matches in a row, they will get demoted to a lower rank. This is how competitive mode works in Marvel Rivals too, although there is a bit more cushioning available for players. With the ever-evolving meta of Marvel Rivals, it is quite easy to get into a losing streak. However, instead of players getting demoted after a loss, the Chrono Shield will prevent them from losing their current rank. However, it will only work once, and after that, if players continue to lose, they will lose their rank and the Chrono Shield will go on a cooldown. So basically all it does is give players one more chance to get out of their losing streak, beyond which the regular rules kick in.
How to Recharge Chrono Shield?
The Chrono Shield recharges automatically based on the number of losses players have. The number of wins does not have any effect on the Chrono Shield whatsoever. So after a few losses, the Chrono Shield will be fully recharged and will be available for use. So the next time players lose, it will lose all its charge to prevent the players from getting demoted, if that case arises. The only catch is that the Chrono Shield is more helpful for players at lower ranks.
This is because the amount of losses required to recharge the Chrono Shield increases as players climb up the rank ladder. In short, it is more helpful for players who are new to the game and in the starting ranks. Obviously, the best way to ensure that players have the Chrono Shield to back them up is to make sure they don’t lose too many in a row and win some games in between, as that’d ensure that their elo doesn’t drop too low to reach the demotion, while the Chrono Shield continues to build up charge. Overall, the Chrono Shield is a great feature to have in Marvel Rivals’s competitive modes for players who are very particular about their ranks.
