Markus ‘Notch’ Persson teases Minecraft 2, fans overwhelmingly support the idea

Minecraft Creator Notch teases Minecraft 2 Cover

  • Minecraft is a sandbox game originally created by Markus “Notch” Persson, who later sold the rights to Microsoft.
  • Notch has announced his intention to work on a spiritual successor to Minecraft, without infringing on the work of Mojang Studios.
  • Do note that this game may never come to fruition, but Notch has clarified that he genuinely wants to give it a shot.

Markus Persson, widely known as Notch and the creator of Minecraft, has teased the possibility of Minecraft 2, creating excitement on X (formerly known as Twitter). He shared that he is enjoying game development again and expressed his interest in creating a game very similar to Minecraft.

We might be getting Minecraft 2, or something very similar to it

The Twitter space is going nuts right now, as Notch has been actively engaging with everyone, talking about his desire to create a new game. He recently took to X to gather feedback by launching a Poll, asking his fans whether he should make Minecraft 2 or continue developing his traditional roguelike game blended with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler, which he is very passionate about. And as everyone expected, Minecraft 2 won the Poll by a landslide, with 77.5% votes compared to 22.5% votes for his passion project.

This news has sent Minecraft fans and everyone else into a frenzy. Everyone is hyped for the sequel, especially as Notch is quite serious about it. Although he left Mojang Studios and sold his stakes for $2.5 billion to Microsoft, he has since co-founded a new company called Rubberbrain, now known as Bitshift Entertainment. Fans can expect a great game, as he has both the funds and a studio to create it.

He confirmed via X, that he did indeed announce Minecraft 2. Responding to a user’s question, he explained “I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.” He also clarified that he has no intention of infringing on the work of his former team, Mojang Studios is doing.

However, before getting too excited, you should also know that this game may never happen. Notch is already set in life and has no incentive to work on it. Right now, his motivation comes from the joy of developing a game again, as he mentioned, “But I do know I’m genuinely loving having fun working on a game in an office and would love to give it a shot.” He mentioned his current project is titled ‘Adventureland’, which might excite Minecraft fans. Notch did not mention about any platforms either.

As someone who has spent hundreds of hours in Minecraft, I feel this project can skyrocket easily. Being the original Minecraft creator it should not be very hard for Notch to return to the roots and create something from scratch. I am sure his knowledge about the userbase is invaluable and he can create another masterpiece! Stay tuned in this space, for more information regarding any updates for Minecraft 2.
