Control 2 is set to bring a sequel to its hit predecessor brought to life by developer Remedy Entertainment. After the first game’s success, many are eager to see what Remedy has in store for its next mind-bending story. While many of the game’s details remain under wraps, one of the most surprising details confirmed for Control 2 is that it will opt for a different genre as an action RPG.
Although unexpected, this reveal is certainly intriguing. The Control IP has helped build Remedy’s in-game universe, as its tie-in with the Alan Wake series brought a trippy, fascinating twist. Now that the sequel will take an action RPG approach, it raises questions about Control 2‘s differences from its predecessor. This genre switchup is evidence that Remedy Entertainment isn’t afraid to approach different genres with its unique brand of creativity.

Remedy’s Impressive Range Hopefully Continues to Pay Off
Remedy’s knack for experimentation makes the studio stand out, but there’s a risk of substantial changes muddying up a franchise’s identity. Alan Wake 2 was one of last year’s most fascinating stories, but it also failed to turn a profit for Remedy. While it was hailed as a success by many critics and players, it can be argued that diverting from its original formula may have alienated fans less interested in more explicit horror games. However, an action RPG can possess many of the same interesting gameplay concepts that drew in original Control players, making it a smoother transition than Alan Wake‘s.
As the wait for more news on Control 2‘s action RPG approach continues, Remedy will hopefully shed more light on this shake-up soon. Despite being officially confirmed in November 2022, very little information has been offered. Once the first glimpse of gameplay is revealed, many fans will be observing closely to see how much of a difference this genre switch will make.

2025 Could Be a Big Year for Remedy
A release window for Control 2 has yet to be revealed, but that doesn’t mean 2025 won’t be an important year for Remedy. The recently announced FBC: Firebreak, a multiplayer title set in the Control universe, aims to expand the franchise in yet another unexpected way. The multiplayer title doesn’t have a launch date yet, but Remedy has at least confirmed FBC: Firebreak is eyeing a 2025 release.
FBC: Firebreak will be the first self-published game from Remedy Entertainment.
Since Remedy has become well-known for tying its games to one another, it’s likely that FBC: Firebreak could be setting the stage for Control 2. It’s unknown how closely FBC: Firebreak will be tied to its respective franchise, but it hopefully gives further insight into the action RPG follow-up.
