The Best MTG Commander Precons Released In 2024

The year 2024 saw a ton of new Commander Precons (pre-made decks meant to be played out of the box) for Magic: The Gathering. With a few exceptions, nearly every major set released had a set of Commander decks to go along with them (and usually in batches of four). There were over 20 different Commander decks, each of varying quality but some stand as clear winners above the rest.

Magic: The Gathering – The 13 Best Bird Typal Commanders

Beware the birds.

The strongest Commander decks are ones that stand on their own without outside help. They are playable right out of the box and while they benefit from upgrades, they aren’t necessary for them to function, unlike other certain Precons.

Tricky Terrain

Everything On Anything

MTG Omo, Queen of Vesuva card with art in the background.

One of the Modern Horizons 3 Commander Precons, Tricky Terrain was all about putting everything counters on your lands and creatures. These made them every land or creature type, respectively, which could then take advantage of support cards meant for other types they normally aren’t. There was also a landfall theme as well to ramp into all your spells quickly.

Tricky Terrain has a lot going for it, especially with the backup landfill strategies. It can build a board presence very quickly thanks to how easily it can generate a board state with creature tokens and cast your expensive spells with how many lands can hit the battlefield quickly.

Quick Draw

Sling Your Spells

Stella Lee, Wild Card card with art in the background.

Quick Draw is a precon designed to do what Izzet (blue/red) does best: cast a ton of spells. The entire list is cards that care about you casting spells along with spells that only cost one mana, so you can cast a ton of them in just one turn.

Quick Draw has a ton of payoffs for spellslinger strategies, primarily ones that create creature tokens to amass a board presence with the spells you play. While it is missing some payoffs (namely ones that have storm), the decklist is very good at what it’s trying to do – create creatures by playing as many instant and sorceries as possible.

8

Family Matters

Offspring Your Creatures

Zinnia, Valley's Voice card with art in the background.

Family Matters is a precon built around the offspring mechanic introduced in Bloomburrow. As such, the face commander is about granting offspring to all your creatures by paying two mana to create a 1/1 token copy of them. The decklist includes a ton of cards with enter the battlefield triggers as well as ones with powerful passive and triggered abilities.

While it does suffer a bit from a not too great ramp package, Family Matters is very coherent out of the box. It has a fantastic commander and a ton of useful creatures, all making the best use of Zinnia’s (the commander) ability.

7

Deep Clue Sea

Undersea Investigation

MTG Morska, Undersea Sleuth card with art in the background.

Deep Clue Sea has a very clear game plan, and that’s drawing multiple cards a turn. This is easily done within the confines of the precon, both with the commander that investigates every turn to make a Clue and with various draw spells to trigger all of your permanents.

There are tons of ways to build your Magic: The Gathering Elf deck, and we’ve highlighted all the best colors to pick from.

Bant (green/white/blue) is the best color for drawing cards, and Deep Clue Sea takes advantage of the various support cards released over the years. There are a ton of payoffs included for drawing cards, making it so you’re always fresh on cards in your hand.

6

Peace Offering

Group Hug With The Bunny

Ms. Bumbleflower card with card art in the background.

Peace Offering offered a precon for those who love group hug strategies (decks that support your opponents so they want you to stay in the game while you work towards your win condition). It’s very effective at that, with the face commander Ms. Bumblefower giving your opponents free draws while you grow your own creatures with +1/+1 counters.

Peace Offering is a great precon with its own win conditions included that group hug wants to be playing, such as Simic Ascendancy and Triskaidekaphile. The deck out of the box has all the tools it needs to be an effective group hug deck, making it the best precon for that particular strategy.

5

Eldrazi Incursion

Six-Color Eldrazi

MTG Ulalek, Fused Atrocity card with art in the background.

While Eldrazi has had a precon before, Eldrazi Incursion is the only six-color precon in Commander. As the name implies, it’s built around the Eldrazi creature type, with all colors available for you to play. It includes a solid artifact and land base, making it so you don’t have to worry about not having the right colors to cast your spell.

Eldrazi are known for their ability to run away with the game, something Eldrazi Incursion can do with ease. You can copy all your Eldrazi spells when you cast them with the commander Ulalek, Fused Atrocity to make an even greater board presence for your opponents to deal with.

4

Mutant Menace

A Rad Precon

MTG The Wise Mothman card with art in the background.

Released as part of the Universes Beyond collaboration with Fallout, Mutant Menace is a great deck out of the box that you hardly need to alter. It’s built around spreading rad counters to your opponents and milling them to gain various effects on your creatures.

Mutant Menace has everything you need in a precon. A consistent game plan, a solid land base, and creatures and threats that your opponents need to deal with. While precons are generally weaker than decks created by players, Mutant Menace is strong enough to hold its own without any alterations against non-precon decks.

3

Squirreled Away

Overrun With Squirrels

MTG - Hazel of the Rootbloom card with art in the background.

Squirrel Away was the only Bloomburrow precon that focused exclusively on a creature type, that being Squirrels. The decklist includes just about every Squirrel and Squirrel support card you want to be playing, making it the perfect precon for those looking for a commander deck playing the furry creatures.

The precon is very combat focused by nature, heavily focusing on just the one creature type of Squirrel. It also includes some expensive reprints that benefit the overall strategy, making for a synergetic precon that’s one of the best of 2024.

2

Hail, Caesar

Ave, True To Caesar

MTG Caesar, Legion's Emperor card with art in the background.

Hail, Caesar is a precon that you could never update and it would still be great. The deck is built around sacrificing your own creatures for value, complete with all the cards that benefit from creatures dying like Pitiless Plunderer and Bastion of Remembrance.

Caesar, Legion’s Emperor is a fantastic commander that does everything you need in a commander. It amasses more of a board presence, draws you cards, or deals burn damage. Outside of a few cards, there are barely any bad cards in the deck, and it is one of the tightest precons released in 2024.

1

Endless Punishment

Burn, Baby Burn

Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls card with art in the background.

Endless Punishment was a part of the last set of Commander decks released in 2024, and is the best Commander deck of 2024. The deck is built around slowly burning your opponents by punishing them for doing basic things in the game like drawing cards or losing life.

This burn deck can very quickly run away with the game by slowly burning your opponents out of the game. There are not a ton of large threats, making it harder for your opponents to choose which permanents to get rid of. It has a clear game plan with a ton of powerful cards, making it one of the best precons you can play.
