Madame Xanadu
The Princess Of Camelot
- First Appearance – Doorway to Nightmare #1 (1978)
- Creator – David Michelinie
- Real Name – Nimue Inwudu
Half-sister of the legendary Arthur Pendragon and former princess of Camelot, Nimue (Madame Xanadu) is somewhat considered royalty, even in the 20th century. After attempting to cast a spell on Merlin, Madame Xanadu was stripped of her magical powers and devoted her life to making amends for that grave mistake. In the process, she became immortal by beating Death herself in a card game.
With her new-found immortality, Madame Xanadu lived out her days helping guide mystical and magical beings with her immense knowledge of the mystic arts. With her ability to read Tarot Cards, she can see into the future, which is what caused her to create the Justice League Dark. Although she has regained some of her magical powers and has been known to fight a good fight, Madame Xanadu acts more as an adviser to Justice League Dark, rather than a warrior on the battlefield.

Deadman
The Ghostly Detective
- First Appearance – Strange Adventures #205 (1967)
- Creator – Arnold Drake
- Real Name – Boston Brand

She granted Brand the ability to travel the world as a ghost-like entity to atone for his past sins and seek justice for those who killed him. Boston Brand now travels the globe, helping others seek out justice as Deadman.
With his ghost-like abilities, Deadman is a key player in Justice League Dark. Deadman can fly, become invisible, travel dimensions, and phase through objects. Perhaps his most useful abilities are his possession powers, allowing him to use mind control, telepathy, and even take control of host bodies.
7
Pandora
The One Who Opened The Box
- First Appearance – New Comics #5 (1936)
- Creator – Hoe Shuster
- Real Name – Unknown

As her punishment, she was cursed with immortality and forced to see the pain and suffering caused by the Seven Deadly Sins for thousands of years.
Over her years of punishment, she set out to learn different forms of magic and mystical arts in an attempt to defeat the Sins. During this time, she learned Telekinesis, Teleportation, The Voice (the ability to compel others), Healing, and other magic-based powers. Her immense knowledge of Magical and Mystical beings from her prolonged life, combined with her powers and skills, make her a great addition to Justice League Dark.
6
Swamp Thing
The Protector Of The Green
- First Appearance – House of Secrets #92 (1971)
- Creator – Len Wein
- Real Name – Alec Holland
Swamp Thing is the avatar of the Green, one of the elemental forces of the universe that connect all forms of plant-based life. After Alec Holland, an American scientist, created a Bio-Restorative Formula in an attempt to end world hunger, a bomb was planted in his facility, and Alec was caught in the explosion. During the explosion, a combination of magical forces, and his own Bio Formula, turned Alec into the Avatar Swamp Thing.
As an elemental Avatar, Swamp Thing is nearly indestructible, possesses super-strength, and — most importantly — can control the Green. His control over the Green allows him to control plant life, regenerate and create new bodies from virtually nothing, and essentially be everywhere at once, so long as there is plant life nearby.

DC’s heroes have had to face off against plenty of powerful supervillains but some of their worst enemies come straight from Hell.
Jason is the main host, with Etrigan only appearing when summoned. Etrigan is considered one of the most powerful demons in Hell, and it’s not surprising with all his abilities. Etrigan can summon Hellfire, which is powerful enough to hurt gods, has superhuman strength and durability, and can use magic. Due to being cursed with immortality, Etrigan has become one of the best warriors in the DC Universe after lifetimes of fighting.

These DC heroes are dripping with cynicism, making them not exactly popular amongst their superhero peers.
With his silver tongue, Constantine has made deals with the Devil, manipulated the Spectre, and even blackmailed God himself. With all his powers, magical knowledge and silver tongue, John Constantine is one of the most powerful humans in DC. However, after Upside-Down Man extracted the Demon Blood from his body, Constantine had to become more cautious when using Black Magic.
3
Phantom Stranger
The Man Who Betrayed Jesus Of Nazareth
- First Appearance – Phantom Stranger #1 (1952)
- Creator – John Broome
- Real Name – Judas Iscariot
When Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus of Nazareth, he was overwhelmed with guilt and regret and chose to end his own life. After waking up, expecting either Heaven or most likely Hell, he found himself in the Circle of Eternity, and coincidentally, he was being sentenced at the time as another member of Justice League Dark, Pandora.
Cursed by God himself, the Phantom Stranger has Divine Empowerment, acting on God’s behalf whenever requested. These abilities consist of but are not limited to Immortality, Flight, Magic, Astral Projection, Ectokinesis, Reality Alteration, Bio-Fusion, and more. With all these abilities and thousands of years’ worth of knowledge, it’s easy to see how strong the Phantom Stranger truly is.
2
Zatanna
The Mistress Of Magic
- First Appearance – Hawkman #4 (1964)
- Creator – Gardner Fox
- Real Name – Zatanna Zatara
Zatanna Zatara is one of the most powerful magic users to have ever lived. Being the daughter of the powerful sorcerer Zatara, Zatanna has been learning and using magic her whole life. Unlike fellow Justice League Dark member John Constantine, Zatanna is a Homo-Magi, a sub-race of humans with the inherent ability to use magic, making her naturally more powerful.
Zatanna uses Logomancy; she can essentially make anything happen simply by speaking her spells backwards. On one occasion, she made the Batwing suit disintegrate instantly by saying ‘explode’ backwards. She is arguably one of the best practitioners of Black Magic, using it for Resurrection and Death Inducement. With all her knowledge and power, Zatanna may even be a top contender for the most powerful mortal magician in all of DC.
1
Doctor Fate
The Lord Of Order
- First Appearance – More Fun Comics #55 (1940)
- Creator – Gardner Fox
- Real Name – Kent Nelson / Khalid Nassour
Dr. Fate is one of the most powerful heroes in all of DC, arguably surpassing Superman, so it’s no surprise he is at the top of this ranking. Being one of the best magic users to ever live and the best magic user of the modern age, Doctor Fate is one of the most powerful and knowledgeable beings in DC.
As a Lord of Order, it is no surprise Fate joined Justice League Dark, as their goals are closely aligned with keeping the Lords of Chaos at bay. With nearly unlimited power, divine empowerment, an indomitable will, elemental control, and many more powers and abilities, Doctor Fate is clearly the most powerful member of Justice League Dark — and maybe even the whole Justice League.
