Summary
- Jim Carrey is open to reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 4.
- This is despite almost leaving the series after the second film, and the third one giving him yet another out.
- However, he would “consider” coming back for Sonic 4, so this might not be the last we see of Eggman.
Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ahead
Jim Carrey might reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic movies once again. This comes after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was written to give him an out, in case he didn’t want to return to the series after the second film.
In an interview with the Japanese outlet Cinema Today (thanks, GoNintendo), Carrey says that he will “consider” coming back for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. This is despite the actor previously indicating that he would leave the role behind, retiring from acting.
Jim Carrey Might Not Be Done Playing Dr. Robotnik
The actor isn’t ruling out another run as Eggman
“If I get the next idea, I’ll consider it, and if the content is interesting, I’ll come back as Robotnik,” says Carrey. “I never turn down a role unless I’m not interested. I love this crew, and it’s fun to make a movie with them.”
He also says that he’s enjoyed his interactions with the Sonic fanbase since taking the role. “The passionate fans always respond favourably, and they help me out a lot by asking me things like, ‘How about this next?’ Sonic is a movie that we all make together.”
This gives us a bit of hope after Sonic 3 seemed to quite definitively write Eggman out of the films. It’s hard to imagine how you come back from being blown up in space, but if it brought Carrey back as Eggman, we can certainly expect it to happen.

Sonic Movie Writers Didn’t Want Amy To Be A Side Character
Amy was almost introduced in previous Sonic films, but the writers didn’t want her to just be a side character.
In another interview, the writers have saidthat they’re prepared to write in the character’s return if Carrey wants to reprise the role.
“We knew there was a very real possibility that this might be his last one, and it might be for real, but we wanted to make it a satisfying capper for him,” said writer Pat Casey. “So, if this is the last we saw of Ivo, he had a good, complete story with a real ending that feels satisfying.
Casey then joked that Eggman is “definitely, definitely, definitely dead” – unless he “survives somehow”. In other words, they are very much keeping their options open, in case they’re able to secure Carrey for yet another sequel.
