Summary
- Marvel Rivals players have been comparing the game’s outfits to their Marvel’s Avengers equivalent.
- People aren’t being very kind about the Avengers skins, and the comparison shots demonstrate that’s warranted.
- Most Rivals players are just grateful Marvel and NetEase went with comic book likenesses for the hero shooter.
Marvel Rivals has been a huge success during its first month. So much so that its players are only just beginning to realize what the game could have been had it taken inspiration from the last Marvel team-up game, Marvel’s Avengers. Players have been comparing outfits from both games and almost 18 months after support for it came to a premature end, somehow Avengers is still being torn apart and dunked on.
Reddit user Captain_JiinSage created some comparison images that put characters from the Rivals roster next to their Avengers equivalents, complete with matching outfits, sharing them on the Marvel Rivals subreddit. However, calling them matching outfits is almost a stretch. While it’s clear they’re wearing the same thing in their respective gaming universes, the Rivals versions of the outfits are so much better that the comparisons have generated some serious shade from the Rivals community.

The bulk of the replies note that the Avengers characters look like they’re cosplaying as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes rather than embodying them. Captain America kicks off the gallery with the Avengers model looking a lot like US Agent from the MCU, a villainous character whose whole thing is being a budget Captain America. Rivals’ Cap’, by comparison, looks like he’d knock US Agent, and the Avengers’ version of himself, into the stratosphere with a single swing of his shield.

Even In Death, Avengers Isn’t Safe From Ridicule
Cap’s comparison isn’t even close to being the one getting the most flack. The Thor side-by-side that comes directly after it is particularly telling, the Avengers version of the God of Thunder looking rougher than he did when thrown to Earth without Mjolnir. Black Panther being described as looking like a dad who bought a Black Panther Halloween costume because his kids are into superheroes is up there with my favorite slams, although one player asking why Hawkeye looks like he’s part of a disc golf league takes my top spot.
Most of the costumes where the heroes have their faces showing are the ones that come out looking so much worse when directly compared to the same skins in Rivals. The overall takeaway from players once they’re done taking their shots is that they’re glad NetEase went with designs closer to how the heroes and villains appear in the comics rather than making them seem more real. One of many mistakes made with Avengers that led to support for the game ending long before intended.
