There are certain comic book characters where the actor has become synonymous with the role, and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is undoubtedly that. He’s played the iconic character in nine films, going through various versions of the X-Men, several spin-off films, and even dabbling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of Deadpool & Wolverine.
Jackman has fully committed to the part from a physical and mental standpoint, and his consistently brilliant performances as the X-Men character have left fans always wanting more. Will Marvel Recast Wolverine?
There has been no confirmation that Marvel intends to recast the character of Wolverine in the near future, but it’s something that does feel inevitable. Jackman is 56 and has been playing the role since 2000, which would indicate that he’s likely going to be slowing down soon when it comes to his ability to play huge action roles such as Wolverine. That’s when Marvel will have a problem on its hands because the character is so iconic and popular that people will want to keep seeing it on the big screen.
Marvel will be well aware of the popularity of Wolverine as a character, and while Jackman has played a big part in making that happen throughout the past two decades, he cannot take on the role forever. Audiences have already seen him take on an old-man version of Logan, so exploring that as a possibility for Marvel Studios would feel repetitive. That opens up the need to recast the character if they want to keep using him in different stories together.
How Deadpool Vs. Wolverine Made It Harder
It’s going to be a challenge for Marvel because fans will always associate Wolverine with Jackman. Even though iconic DC characters like Superman and Batman have been recast after brilliant performances, no actor has ever been associated with someone in the way Jackman has with Wolverine for so many years. It’s an issue Marvel Studios will have if they ever want to recast Iron Man, as people will always picture Robert Downey Jr. in that role.
Marvel’s decision to bring Jackman’s version of Wolverine into the MCU was something that made the entire situation trickier because now people know what that character looks like in the MCU. Previously, Jackman had operated outside of the MCU by being involved in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men projects. Therefore, when the character debuted in the MCU, Marvel had the chance to bring in a completely new version of Wolverine with a different actor. That would’ve felt like a clean break, especially since Logan was such a perfect movie for Jackman’s version to end on. Ultimately, that didn’t happen, and Deadpool & Wolverine was an enjoyable film many people wanted to see. However, it left people wanting more, and that could lead to a timing issue, given that the X-Men are expected to appear in the MCU soon.
When Is The Right Time To Recast Wolverine?
The perfect time for Marvel to recast Wolverine was likely for the MCU debut of the character. However, now that opportunity has passed, the next spot to do it should be whenever Marvel creates its first X-Men movie. The characters are expected to be entering the MCU soon. Therefore, a whole flurry of mutants will join the MCU, providing Marvel with new powers and personalities to work with. Considering Wolverine’s importance to that particular group, fans will expect him to be involved in a significant capacity.
Marvel will want to use the X-Men for the foreseeable future. Therefore, it’s likely that they will cast younger actors so that there’s room for growth and long-term planning. Jackman doesn’t fit that bill, so when that movie gets made, there should be a newer, younger version of the character introduced with a fresh actor so that they can start perfectly. This will allow the actor to build chemistry with those involved, giving fans the chance to connect to the character as Marvel can begin building the blocks for the long term with the character, and that will be important for the MCU in how they want to use Wolverine.
Having Jackman sticking around as Wolverine at that point would feel out of place. While he could take on a mentorship role or potentially even be in charge of finding younger mutants to help them, this would be the opportunity to recast the character. However, the pressure for the next actor is going to be immense whenever the decision gets made. That’s something that Marvel Studios is going to have to deal with and be careful with, as Wolverine is such an important and beloved character.
