Summary
- Helldivers 2 has revealed that the Illuminate is actually using humans in an attempt to repopulate, and not in the fun way.
- Forensic pathologists have discovered “unfamiliar proteins” in the Voteless, which have also been found in Illuminate corpses.
- It essentially means humans are being turned into the Voteless, which then turn into Illuminates proper.
Helldivers 2 players have been scrapping with the Illuminate for a few weeks now, ever since they invaded during The Game Awards, though answers regarding where these mysterious enemies came from are still lacking. There are some theories regarding their rather erratic planet hopping, such as the potential that they’re actually running from something, but we don’t have anything massively concrete just yet.
However, thanks to Super Earth’s best scientists, we may actually have a motive. Following the completion of the latest Major Order, Helldivers 2 revealed that forensic pathologists have determined exactly how the Voteless – the packs of shambling zombies that still retain some sense of the humans they once were – are created. Turns out, it’s darker than we thought.
Helldivers 2’s Illuminate Might Be Made From Humans
First shared by Salty_Soykaf on the Helldivers subreddit, it’s explained that the DNA of the Voteless is being altered, and that “unfamiliar proteins” have been found that match those also found in Illuminate corpses. That pretty much confirms the Voteless that we’ve been gunning down in droves, which were created by the Illuminate for the citizens of the planets they’ve invaded, were on their way to becoming full-blown Illuminates.
This essentially means that the Illuminate is actually using humans to repopulate, turning them into Voteless, which then turn into the hulking aliens we’ve been at war with. Another Reddit user called Spectral_Magistrate even theorizes that the reason why the Illuminate is planet hopping is to take the population, filter out the best candidates to turn into Illuminate, execute the rest, and then move onto the next planet.

Helldivers 2 was once an uplifting and collaborative live-service gem, but since launch, the community has become a hotbed of outrage.
This also kind of confirms the theory that the Illuminate are on the brink of extinction, if they’re resorting to transforming humans. Whether that’s to fully repopulate, or just to create an army of their own and hold out before reinforcements arrive, it seems clear that the Illuminate is rapidly multiplying, and that they may not be going anywhere any time soon.
