The world-renowned Squid Game drama series’ highly anticipated second season has finally arrived on Netflix. Coming some time after the first season’s phenomenal debut, the second season of Squid Game has received very positive reviews. The story takes a different turn as Gi-Hun, the winner of the previous season, decides to flush out the sinister group behind the game and bring them into the spotlight. Unfortunately, this line of action forces Gi-hun back into the game, where he seems to be two steps behind at all times.

The second season of Squid Game is a wild ride of personalities with numerous characters. Some characters hinder the saving of lives, others try to increase the group’s chances of survival, and some fall somewhere in between. Each character that grabs some screen time has a unique story that attracts the audience, making them hope to see them make it all the way to the end.

Jung Bae, Played By Lee Seo-Hwan

A Relatable Character Fueled By Need Instead Of Greed

Jung Bae arrives, to Gi-hun’s surprise, as they make it toward the first game in the series. The two go back years, and Gi-Hun is appalled to see his old friend in such a dire situation with such a chipper attitude. As the series progresses, Jung Bae comes to the realization that he has put his life and family at stake.

His dire inner turmoil pushes him toward wanting to end the game one second, and desperate for one more chance at financial freedom the next. Jung Bae brought a relatable energy to the series, presenting an everyman character that would get most into this type of situation.

Geum-Ja, Played By Kang Ae-Slm

A Tragic Story Of A Mother’s Love

This mother-and-son duo, who appeared as the game began, came off as opportunists hoping to make it big with little effort. However, as the series went on and the characters were allowed chances to breathe, audiences learned that the truth was much more tragic.

Geum-Ja, an elderly lady with most of her years behind her, was strictly in the game to keep her son out of trouble. While she may have had her share of financial mistakes, she cared little about her own safety and more about her son’s. The concern and compassion that Geum-ja portrayed in the latter half of the season, compared to the hostility around her early on, made for an interesting contrast.

The Recruiter, Played By Gong Yoo

A Clear Villain To Represent The Games

Seemingly the face of the Squid Games, the Recruiter serves as the scouter for down-on-their-luck individuals who would make terrific cannon fodder for the organization’s entertainment. Fans got a deeper look at the Recruiter in the early half of the season, which was aimed at tracking him down to find where the games are held.

Actor Gong Yoo portrayed this villain spectacularly, giving fans a face to hate and an intense exchange between him and Lee Jung-Jae that had most viewers on the edge of their seats. The Recruiter represents the complicity of the soldiers of the Squid Game, who profit off the death toll, instead of the billionaires who laugh behind the scenes.

No-Eul, Played By Park Gyu-Young

A Complicated Composite Of A Character

No-Eul was a wild card in this season of Squid Game due to the constant whiplash of her character, who went from unfeeling to emotionally conflicted. No-Eul came off as cold to those around her, working a dead-end job and receiving a special invite to the Squid Game to serve as a soldier, not a player.

But try as she might, No-Eul showed moments of compassion when confronted with harsh truths such as a father’s dying daughter, or contestants getting their organs removed or the black market. While No-Eul’s story has yet to finish, she is one of the most interesting characters in the second season.

Su-bong, Played By Chol Seung-Hyun

A Perfect Bad Guy To Root Against

Chol Seung-Hyun brought an excellent character to the second season of Squid Game, who fans loved to hate. The “big deal” rapper, also known asThanos, brought chaos, addiction, ego, and violence to the show and demonstrate just how far desperation can push a person.

Su-Bong was a narcissistic sociopath who only cared about getting the prize money for himself. His charisma and way with words allowed him not only to manipulate most of the players, but also bring together a group of underlings to increase his survivability in the game. All the way to the end, Thanos was an agent of chaos that made the games interesting.

Hyun-Ju Played By Park Sung-Hoon

A Shooting Star Of The Season

Hyun-Ju was an unexpected star of the second season of Squid Game, bringing tears, laughs, and cheers as she progressed through the game. Park Sung-Hoon gave this character a fantastic performance that greatly impacted the series.

A transgender woman, Hyun dove into the games to get enough money so she could go somewhere where she felt she belonged. Invaluable in almost every game, Hyun-Ja admirably leads a small group through the games. However, as Hyun-Ju found her allies in the games, her choices put their lives in danger.

Frontman, Played By Lee Byung-Hun

A Perfect Puppet Master Role

Lee Byung-Hun brought the sinister Frontman to life, reprising his role from the first season. The Frontman stepped out of the mask and into the games this season, presenting himself as an innocent player and gaining the trust of Gi-hun.

Saying the right things at the right time, the Frontman carefully examined Gi-hun’s convictions and manipulated the masses out of what seemed to be pure curiosity. Mirroring the role of O Yeong-Su as player 001 in the previous season, Gi-hun once again fell victim to an act. However, this portrayal of the double agent is much more terrifying. His intent is unclear, but his actions speak volumes.

Gi-Hun, Played By Lee Jung-Jae

Repeating The Same Task; Expecting A Different Result

Gi-Hun returns much richer, but empty inside due to the results of the last game. Turning his back on his winnings and instead using them to find the games and shut them down lands Gi-hun in a perilous predicament back in the games. With no other choice, he decides to save as many lives as possible and turn the players against the game masters.

Gi-Hun’s goal, while noble, is ultimately flawed and challenged by the Frontman or “In-Ho,” who constantly picks apart Gi-Hun’s efforts. Watching Gi-Hun fail in his tireless efforts to preserve life is a devastating experience, but the climax that may present itself in the third season is more than enough to continue the game.
