A Massive MCU Appearance Might've Just Been Spoiled In A Pretty Hilarious Way

Summary

  • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is the MCU’s most highly-anticipated film due to a massive cast list
  • Recent leaks suggest Charlie Cox will play Daredevil in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
  • The MCU seems resolved to aim for more grounded stories amidst speculation about Daredevil’s role in setting up new characters.

Avengers: Doomsday is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most highly-anticipated film post-Avengers: Endgame due to anticipation surrounding the massive cast list for the project, and one of the title’s more interesting appearances might have been leaked by enthusiastic oversight from a trainer.

The Avengers have been a staple of the MCU since they first assembled on the big screen in 2012, following five precursor films that helped establish characters like Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, and Captain America before bringing them together to save the world. The full team of Avengers would continue to grow as the MCU labored on with new projects and threats until the full might of the team and their allies would be shown one final time in the climax of Avengers: Endgame. Since then, the MCU has been without an official Avengers team, returning instead to setting up new and returning characters to come together in like fashion for the next Avengers-level threat.

Early Superman Test Screening Earns Marvel-Level Comparisons

The early screen tests for the upcoming Superman movies are earning comparisons to one particular Marvel film.

One big addition to the MCU’s revitalizing roster is Daredevil, a fan-favorite from the Netflix Marvel era of shows played by Charlie Cox. While the character’s proper MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again will be a highlight of the MCU’s 2025, a recent slip-up seems to suggest that there’s an even bigger appearance for the character already on the table. A post from the account dfrnt.hq on Instagram showing Cox and his wife alongside two trainers from the DFRNT Health and Fitness Gym/Physical Fitness Center posing together after a workout might have given away a bit too much in the caption, which read,

It’s been awesome having Charlie and his wife, Sam Cox in at DFRNT over the past few weeks! Charlie is currently training for his role in the upcoming Marvel Avengers movie where he will play Daredevil.

Commenters were quick to point out the obvious: fans weren’t privy to the fact that Cox would be appearing in the next Avengers films, meaning that the post might have inadvertently announced the Man Without Fear’s cameo in the film for the first time.

This massive spoiler, which falls in line with recent rumors that Daredevil has been set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, has since been edited to cover up the blunder. This could lend credibility to the claim or have been done to avoid confusion for fans after accidentally releasing false information, but its clear which way fans are leaning on that one now. Fans will certainly be excited to see Cox in the film, and his involvement might mean that the MCU as a whole is still subject to the previously revealed plans to have more grounded stories and moments in the franchise as a whole.

While Echo wasn’t a particularly cheery first foray into this territory at the start of the year, the 2025 slate is really what fans are looking to as a proper litmus test. With Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* kicking off the theatrical line and Daredevil: Born Again gearing up for Disney+ in short order, fans will know pretty soon what to expect from this crop of characters going into the intense parts of the Multiverse Saga.

This new direction for the MCU is being put forth despite the fact that the very concept the Multiverse Saga arc is based on seems antithetical to grounded storytelling, in the same way Captain America: Brave New World’s political thriller credentials should really be dulled by the presence of Hulk-level characters. While the franchise did limit itself somewhat by explaining and justifying various Marvel characters and concepts away with tech, even that has been left in the dust for more and more spectacle over time.

Now, the job of dragging the franchise back to earth where Keving Feige and company want it to stay will be an uphill battle. Doctor Doom, the film’s eponymous antagonist, embodies mastery of both technology and magic in the comic books, so it’s hard to see the film keeping things contained.

Daredevil: Born Again was likely already the 2025 TV show fans were most excited for, and a potential appearance in a mainline Avengers film only aggravates that interest. Whether or not the first few projects of the MCU’s 2025 rollout deliver might have an effect on how the show is received, but any sort of confirmation that Cox’s Daredevil will be in Avengers: Doomsday could outweigh any other concerns and give the project the MCU’s infamous but effective required reading tag a la Captain Marvel or Falcon & The Winter Soldier. Whether or not the show itself lives up to the hype, however, will be the final deciding factor on how impactful future cameos will be.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently expected to be released theatrically on May 1, 2026.
