Vicious, realistic WW2 shooter Hell Let Loose is totally free, if you’re quick

When it comes to shooters, it’s good to dial up the grit and suspense every once in a while. If you’re in a war, it should feel like it, with all the fear and adrenaline that entails. Hell Let Loose channels the sensory load of World War 2 to an incredible degree, putting you right in the middle of some of history’s most harrowing battles, and it’s free to own right now.

Truly, Hell Let Loose is not an FPS game for the faint of heart. A project that’s predicated on realism and life-or-death strategizing, it hands you a gun and pushes you into a maelstrom of enemies and bullet-addled environments. Across multiple maps, the WW2 game focuses on taking territory from the enemy, capturing points in each skirmish.

But King of the Hill on Blood Gulch this is most certainly not. Bullets zoom past you every other second, allies are moving every which way, and one bad mistake could mean a serious setback. It’s a multiplayer game that demands your attention and will leave you with an embarrassing kill-death ratio if you’re not ready.

First coming out in 2021, there’s now a cavalcade of maps to pick from, covering multiple fronts of World War 2. Although the objectives are essentially the same, the landscapes all require particular attention; where are the vantage points? What cover is on offer? Should we favor speed or bleed the opposition out?

Two of the three modes are 50 vs 50, with a third at 25 vs 25. You have a lot of cohorts, but just as many opposing forces to worry about. Rounds are big, and they make you feel small. There’s a similar energy to Warzone and Battlefield at times, but don’t get comfortable – Hell Let Loose is more cutthroat than either.

Hell Let Loose is available for free on the Epic Games Store right now, until Friday, January 3 at 8am PT/ 11am ET/ 4pm GMT. We also have lists of the best battle royale games and the best war games to keep your trigger finger in good shape.
