Filled with familiar faces such as Reinhard van Astrea and Garfiel Tinzel, Re:Zero’s assortment of characters stands at the forefront of the isekai genre, with the Crunchyroll fan favorite ranking as one of the best anime franchises of its generation.

Over the course of Re:Zero, female characters carry much of the burden. While the main protagonist, Subaru, heroically fights for the region of Lugunica, he is surrounded by a wealth of strong and capable women who often help the frequently nicknamed Barusu. Despite Return by Death aiding Subaru, under the protection of the Witch of Envy, the cast of eclectic female characters alongside him establish themselves as integral to the proceedings throughout this dark fantasy isekai.

With all the Royal Selection candidates and their entourages being in the city, many characters have shown their value by either battling the Witch Cult or helping in the fight. Thanks to Re:Zero’s breathtaking newest season, the list has been updated to take into account the actions of certain female characters, while entries will be added due to new individuals making their mark on the story.

Liliana Masquerade

Cheerful And Bubbly Bard Who Accompanies Priscilla

One of season 3’s brightest sparks has been the introduction of Liliana Masquerade, the talented bard who has become a helping hand to Subaru and Priscilla while in Priestella. The wild and joyous Liliana hits it off with Subaru’s party. However, her unusual relationship with the often arrogant Priscilla is an odd combination, although the tandem works well as they seek to save the city.

Along with her Divine Protection of Telepathy, Liliana has the potential to do much good, with the character being set up for an impactful presence in the second half of season 3.

Capella Emerada Lugunica

Shapeshifting Member Of The Witch Cult

Emerging as one of season 3’s newest additions, Capella Emerada Lugunica makes an immediate impression on audiences, with the Sin Archbishop of Lust tormenting fan favorites Subaru and Crusch Karsten on arrival. Along with the other Witch Cult members, Capella threatens the peace of Priestella, destroying the lives of many and the city’s landscape.

Besides her shapeshifting abilities that trick Subaru and Crusch, Capella’s vile antics have led to citizens turning into animals, resulting in the character becoming a fierce enemy of Subaru as he vows to get revenge for her evil transgressions.

Frederica Baumann

Fierce But Kind Demi-Human ​​​​Maid

The second season saw the introduction of Garfiel and his half-sister Frederica Baumann, with the juxtaposition of the siblings becoming apparent from the get-go. While Frederica performs her role as a maid, the demi-human utilizes her innate ability, allowing her to transform into a mighty leopard when Elsa attempts to assassinate individuals at Roswaal Manor.

While a fierce fighter, Frederica is a kind soul who mentors Petra Leyte in her maid duties, with the demi-human being one of Roswaal L. Mather’s most senior workers.

Village Girl Inspired By Subaru

Arlam Village’s own Petra is the village’s central character when Subaru and his friends become intertwined in events in Roswaal’s domain. Appearing personable and energetic, Petra becomes an acquaintance of Subaru after seeing his impact on her home and is inspired by his heroic actions.

In the show’s second season, Petra jumps into the role of a maid at Roswaal Manor in order to stay close to Subaru, for whom she cares deeply. Despite being young and inexperienced, her contributions to Emilia and Subaru’s quest are of high value, and her role is only set to increase in the coming story arcs.

Priscilla Barielle

Confident And Cruel Princess Who Can Hold Her Own In Combat

Of all the Royal Selection candidates, Priscilla Barielle is undoubtedly the most detestable of the bunch, degrading everyone in her vicinity. As a princess, Priscilla is often condescending towards her bodyguard, Al, and the protagonist, Subaru, considering them to be beneath her. While Priscilla is shown to be rude and ignorant of others, the character improves her standing in season 3 by participating in the fight against the Witch Cult.

In combat, Priscilla shows that she is a force to be reckoned with, with the princess handling Capella’s minions with ease to help save Subaru from danger.

Anastasia Hoshin

Business-Minded Royal Selection Candidate Who Invites Her Rivals To Priestella

Often known for her business acumen and high class, Anastasia Hoshin has thrived as a character in season 3 of Re:Zero. Initially appearing greedy and self-serving in her first interactions with Subaru, Anastasia has since shown concern for others as the city of Priestella falls into ruin.

Acting as one of the leaders of the Priestella defense force, Anastasia works together with Subaru, Julius, and Reinhard to try to overcome the crisis that befalls Priestella. While often operating as a smooth and calculated individual, Anastasia is willing to rely on others to help achieve success, with Anastasia trusting Subaru on many occasions to get the job done against the Witch Cult.

Elsa Granhiert

Vindictive And Evil Assassin

One of Re:Zero’s most evil and vile characters comes in the form of Elsa Granhiert, an assassin who has plagued Subaru throughout his journey. Often being the one to end Subaru’s life on multiple occasions, Elsa haunts the eccentric protagonist, acting as his grim reaper as he progresses in his quest.

The murderous woman takes pleasure in all forms of combat, with Elsa being nicknamed the Bowel Hunter due to her vicious hobby. Near the end of season two, Elsa’s battle with Garfiel proves epic. However, Elsa ultimately succumbs to the jaws of defeat, with the assassin’s reign of terror finally coming to an end.

Thief Turned Contender For The Throne

The energetic thief Felt may have only appeared in a few episodes during the first season, but the character’s unwavering attitude and demeanor make her exceedingly memorable.

As a low-level thief who stays in the slums with Old Man Rom, Felt’s world is flipped upside down by Reinhard when he makes the young girl a contender for the throne of Lugunica, competing against figures such as Priscilla and Emilia. Despite her dramatic rise in society, Felt manages to stay level-headed amidst her uprooting as long as she has allies like Rom and Reinhard by her side.

Crusch Karsten

Intelligent Leader Of A Powerful House

Representing House Karsten, Crusch leads with authority when Subaru and Rem come to treat with her faction. Filled with intelligence and poise, Crusch leads by example, helping Subaru in his quest to save Roswaal’s domain from destruction. While missing for most of Re:Zero’s second season, the leader of House Karsten makes a lasting impression through her united fight with Subaru against the White Whale, leading to its defeat.

Although Crusch has been deprived of many of her memories by Lye, a Sin Archbishop of the Witch Cult, characters such as Felix and Wilhelm van Astrea still look to the Duchess for strength and guidance, highlighting her impressive leadership.

Beatrice

Introverted Spirit Bound By Contract

Beatrice’s brash and withdrawn nature brings many great aspects to Re:Zero, mainly through her complicated relationship with Subaru. In just two seasons, Beatrice has shown a lot of character development, with the introvert starting as a closeted individual hiding in the Forbidden Library.

As Subaru increasingly relies on her, Beatrice shines, offering comedic value and a wealth of information amid ever-growing chaos. After suffering in silence for 400 years, Beatrice opens herself up to Subaru, resulting in her becoming his contracted spirit, with the duo uniting to save the Sanctuary from one of the great Witchbeasts, the Great Rabbit.

Deadpan Maid Acting In Service Of The One She Loves

Ram may not be as kind as her sweet sister, Rem, but the pink-haired servant certainly makes an impression by sticking by Roswaal’s side. Acting as Roswaal’s right hand, the maid is transfixed on pleasing her master, and she bears a deep admiration and love for the wicked magic user.

Often found to be cold and calculated, Ram is shown to do her master’s bidding, particularly in discouraging Subaru and his progress. During the Sanctuary arc, Ram’s care for her colleagues grows, resulting in her becoming a key member of Subaru and Emilia’s group as she aims to help Roswaal overcome his evil desires.

Wicked Witch Acting As An Antagonist

The Witch of Greed’s introduction into the anime’s 2nd season brought a new menacing villain into the fold. As one of the many witches, Echidna stands out through her deceit and desire for information as she entangles herself into Subaru and Emilia’s business.

For Roswaal, Beatrice, and Puck, The Witch of Greed is viewed as an almighty figure who has molded them into the individuals they become. While operating as one of anime’s most conniving antagonists in recent years, Echidna does appear personable when interacting with Subaru, hiding her ulterior motives when engaging with the protagonist.

Caring And Compassionate Maid

In the Re:Zero universe, no character is as considerate and caring as the Roswaal Manor maid, Rem. Becoming iconic in pop culture through her distinctive blue hair and maid outfit, Rem is the more pleasant twin between her and Ram, the ice-cold pink-haired maid. Serving under Roswaal, Rem aims to protect others, even putting her life at risk to defend individuals she cares about.

Alongside her loving and fun relationship with Subaru, Rem has proven to be a fierce warrior in battle, braving the forces of evil with her Oni powers. In combat, Rem is able to spawn a horn on her forehead, making her an unrelenting and powerful force against intimidating foes. Despite currently remaining in a coma, this unique maid is set to play a considerable role in future events in the isekai that will see her become synonymous with the franchise.

Half-Elf Who Strives To Become Queen Of Lugunica

As she strives for the throne in the region of Lugunica, Emilia, the half-elf, has come a long way from her early beginnings in the chronicles of Re:Zero. From being a young girl who loses her entire family and civilization, this female character learns to survive in a world without half-elves. Despite her appearance mirroring the famed Witch of Envy, Satella, Emilia aims to help those in need on her quest to be queen, with the sprout spirit, Puck, being on hand to aid her on her travels.

Being Subaru’s muse and love interest, Emilia becomes more confident throughout Re:Zero’s three seasons, particularly during her tasks in the Sanctuary, which Echidna does not make simple. With Emilia’s past demons being conquered in season 2’s engrossing finale, she stands tall alongside her comrades heading into the third season, finally morphing into the leader she aspires to become.
