The psychological thriller series on Apple TV+ received a positive reception from the audience due to its unique premise that blends dystopian themes with dark humor and psychological depth. Severance focuses on the idea of separating work and personal memories amid the world’s struggle for life and work balance. Adam Scott delivered an impressive performance as Mark Scout, an employee of Lumon Industries who agreed to a “Severance” program where his work memories are separated from his personal memories. When at work, Mark and the rest of the employees in the same program are called “Innies,” and their consciousness only knows about their job. However, when outside work, they are called “Outies” and cannot recall their time spent at work. For them, they just arrive at work and then leave immediately, without any recollection of the eight hours spent on their job. Kier Eagan (Marc Geller) is the founder of Lemon Industries, and company members worship him. Series showrunner Dan Erickson gave an update about Severence Season 2 and the Eagans’ bigger role in the upcoming season.

Severance Showrunner Says There’s Much More To Learn About Kier Eagan in Season 2

Severance_Emmy Nominated

Erickson spoke with GamesRadar’s SFX Magazine and teased some exciting details regarding Severance Season 2. According to him, the Eagans will have the spotlight in the upcoming season and the audience will learn more about what’s to come in terms of their machinery. “We’re going to see some of their plans and machinations coming to fruition, or nearing fruition. It was vitally important that we [the writers] know them, and that we know them well. I have what has become a many, many page document that’s essentially a show bible for us, that keeps the lore of the show,” Erickson shared. So, for fans who have many questions about the cult-like family, the upcoming season likely holds the answer because, aside from updates about their innovation, Erickson teased about an “inter-family drama.”

“We know the exact year that each Eagan CEO took power and which technological advancements happened under their watch. There’s an inter-family drama that I’ve built for them over the course of the generations that will probably never be on the show. But I know it, which helps me. Ironically, having it that rigidly figured out gives us freedom, because we know the sandbox, and we know all the toys that are in the sandbox, and now we can play,” the showrunner continued. There are three popular Eagans in the series — Kier, the visionary founder of Lumon Industries and the first CEO; Helena “Helly” Eagan, his daughter who volunteered to undergo the “severance” procedure; and James Eagan, the current CEO of Lumon Industries. Nothing much is known about the Eagans, so sharing more of their story is something fans have been looking forward to.

The Eagan family is behind Lumon Industries and its controversial “severance” program. The first season hasn’t unveiled their background story and what moved Kier’s philosophies and motivation to initiate the program. So, Severance Season 2 exploring that area will answer the audience’s lingering questions about the family and the purpose of the contentious project. Kier is treated like a God in the series, with his writings and teachings considered sacred texts within Lumon. It’s interesting to learn why he receives such lofty treatment. Was it because of his brilliant ideas, the profit he made, or something more not yet explicitly shown in the show? Since the Eagans are a symbol of power, privilege and legacy passed through generations, getting to know their family and the drama surrounding their clan will give the audience a better understanding of how Lumon became what it is. Thus, there will likely be more flashbacks for historical context.

Severance Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025.
