Phasmophobia is already aiming to bring plenty of exciting changes to the horror title in 2025, with a Sound Recorder being part of these planned updates. Since 2020, Phasmophobia has become a beloved multiplayer title, and developer Kinetic Games recently revealed what’s in store for the ghost-hunting game via an official blog post detailing its roadmap for the year.

In the blog post from Kinetic Games, teases of an overhaul to the Bleasdale Farmhouse and a revamped version of the Journal were exciting enough, but the Sound Recorder in particular is one of the most compelling updates planned for the new year. Since its launch, Phasmophobia has added plenty of updates that have made it a stronger experience for players, but the addition of a Sound Recorder could really change how some approach hunting ghosts.

Phasmophobia’s Sound Recorder Could Bring a Breath of Fresh Air to Ghost Hunting

Adding More Immersion to Heart-Pounding Haunts

For those who are familiar with ghost hunting shows, like Ghost Adventures, sound recording equipment is a go-to tool to capture the alleged paranormal. Now that such an item will be usable in Phasmophobia, playing the role of a professional ghost hunter will feel even more lifelike, enhancing the game’s immersion. According to the Kinetic Games statement, players will be able to capture paranormal sounds and listen back to them. Sound recordings will be replayable through one’s Journal, bringing players an extra way to take note of any ghostly happenings. Phasmophobia‘s approach to horror is incredibly effective, and allowing more tools at players’ disposals can shake up the gameplay in a fascinating way.

There is currently no revealed release date for Phasmophobia‘s 2025 update.

How Phasmophobia’s Sound Recorder Works

As of now, it’s unclear if the Sound Recorder will be able to offer players any major evidence in order to decipher what kind of spirit is haunting an area, but there has been a small bit of insight offered about how the device works. The blog post states, “Investigators will need to use the device’s visual indicators to move within range during a recordable sound. Once you’ve done so, the device will automatically start recording.” Although it’s uncertain if the Sound Recorder will be tied to identifying ghost types or not, it can be a great tool to draw players in even deeper.

Phasmophobia’s 2025 Plans Aim to Continue a Strong Streak

Apart from these newly revealed 2025 plans, Phasmophobia had a strong 2024 as well. After finally launching on consoles on October 29, 2024, Phasmophobia reached 1 million console players in a matter of a month. This marks a huge milestone for the indie hit, and it’s clear that Kinetic Games is wanting to ride that wave of success even further with extra immersion-focused updates. The various overhauls coming in 2025 are bound to make the game feel different for players, and hopefully for the better. When it comes to the Sound Recorder, though, it showcases how Kinetic Games appears to be focused on making its ghost-hunting mechanics feel even more terrifying.

Investigators will need to use the device’s visual indicators to move within range during a recordable sound. Once you’ve done so, the device will automatically start recording.

In addition to console sales, Phasmophobia now boasts over 20 million copies sold across both PC and consoles.

Phasmophobia excels at making players afraid of the unknown, and getting hints of what lurks within each haunted location through sound is a great way to further build tension without revealing too much. Using the right equipment in Phasmophobia can greatly affect a mission, and it will be exciting to see how the Sound Recorder holds up against other items when trying to uncover what kinds of spirits are haunting the game’s various maps.
