The writer behind the manga Squid Girl, Masahiro Anbe, has announced that he will be releasing a new series soon. This new series will be called Akuma de Fukei (unofficially, Demon Policewoman). Akuma de Fukei is currently listed to release its first volume on June 6th, 2025, via Kodansha’s Young Maga KC Special imprint. The volume has already been listed by Japanese online marketplace Rakuten.

This official announcement comes after a post by Anbe himself on his X (formerly Twitter) page back on December 6th. At that time, Anbe had only posted that he had a new series that he was going to release soon, but no other information was available. Now, via the listing page on Rakuten, the title of the new series, a short description of the plot, and a first look at the characters are available.

A Hard-Working Mangaka

Squid Girl

Masahiro Anbe has two other successful manga under his belt already. Arguably his most famous work has been Squid Girl, which was published originally in Weekly Shōnen Champion in 2007. The series came to an end nearly 10 years later, in February 2016. Squid Girl was adapted into a two-season anime, which streamed in 2010 and 2011 on Crunchyroll, and was released simultaneously as it was airing in Japan. Squid Girl is still available to watch now on Crunchyroll now, more than 10 years later, as well as on HIDIVE.

Anbe’s other successful manga series was Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu (Assemble! Mystery Research Club). Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu was also published in Weekly Shōnen Champion from September 2016, just seven months after Squid Girl concluded. Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu just finished in July 2024, and there are currently no plans for an anime adaptation. Now, just under a year after its conclusion, Anbe is back at it again with his latest series.

The listing for the first volume of Akuma de Fukei can be found on Rakuten, which has shared the most information about the new series that we have. The description of the manga on the listing reads (translated from Japanese),

The creator of Squid Girl and Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu takes on the challenge of an everyday romantic comedy with a devilish policewoman that will make anyone swoon! Eclair, a demon, comes all the way from the demon world to a police box in a country town in search of an evil man who is suitable to be her servant. She is attracted to Daichi Kuwabara, a police officer with a bad guy’s face. Eclair wants to get rid of Daichi and Daichi wants to drive Eclair back to the demon world……but Daichi can’t leave Eclair alone because she is cannot be trusted to be on her own.

The description is also accompanied by the first piece of art available for Akuma de Fukei, which shows the characters of Eclair and Daichi in their police uniforms. Eclair has an obvious demon tail in the artwork.

As stated above, the listing has the release date for the first volume of Akuma de Fukei as June 6th, 2025, though it is important to remember that this will be the Japanese version’s release. Seeing as the series has already been picked up by Kodansha, though, there is a high chance that an English version will be released sometime as well. The first volume will have 192 pages, and has a listing price of 792 yen ($5 USD).

Akuma de Fukei will release on June 6th, 2024.
