The Pokemon Company and DeNA confirmed that the new “Friend-Making Battle” event for Pokemon Masters EX will begin on January 3 with new characters, limited-time events, and much more. Pokemon Masters EX is also celebrating the start of the new year with a big reward campaign for a limited time.

Originally released as Pokemon Masters in August 2019, Pokemon Masters EX brings many of the franchise’s most popular Pokemon Trainers into one place for the Masters League. In the Masters League, trainers form sync pairs with their favorite Pokemon and participate in 3-on-3 battles in a tournament to determine the best in the world. As a result, players are incentivized to form teams with Pokemon Trainers and befriend them as they strive to become champions. The game regularly receives new Pokemon Trainers and variants of fan-favorite characters, along with new events every month. The new Friend-Making Battle event kicks off another year of support for Pokemon Masters EX.

The Pokemon Masters EX Friend-Making Battle event begins on Friday, January 3 at 1:00 a.m. EST, and it will introduce “New Year’s 2025” variants of Raihan from Pokemon Sword and Shield on January 3 and Poppy from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on January 4. Both of these Pokemon Trainers will be featured as seasonal sync pair scouts until Tuesday, January 21 at 12:59 a.m. EST. Raihan is paired with Sandaconda, serving as a Ground-type support sync pair that can passively cause a sandstorm when hit and raise allies’ evasiveness by two ranks. Poppy and her Pokemon, Steelix, form a Steel-type field sync pair that can create a Steel Zone when entering battle. Poppy and Steelix can also lower an opponent’s attack and special attack stats while raising allies’ defense and special defense stats.

Pokemon Masters EX Friend-Making Battle Event Begins on January 3

The Friend-Making Battle event also includes a new story featuring Raihan and Poppy as they participate in a friendly competition in Pokemon Masters EX. Players who complete the event’s story will earn Pokemon Trainer Blossom (Furisode Girl), who is paired with Kirlia. Blossom and Kirlia form their own sync pair, but it’s unclear whether they form a support or field sync pair.

Before the event begins, players can log into Pokemon Masters EX to claim free rewards as part of the New Year’s Rally 2025 campaign. Similarly to past Pokemon Masters EX events, up to 5,000 free Gems are being distributed to all players who log in every day before January 12 at 12:59 a.m. EST, and a total of 20 million Gems are being distributed to the community until January 9 at 12:59 a.m. EST. Players who’ve logged into the game before January 9 will receive their share of Gems as a “New Year’s Gem Present” entry in their Present Box starting January 14. Moreover, Brand New Year Tickets are being distributed to all players who log in before January 16 at 12:59 a.m. EST. These tickets can be used at the Brand New Year Ticket Exchange to receive move candy coins and roll cake coins.
