Momoa, who was recently cast as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play his dream role. He took to Instagram and shared a screenshot of a previous comment about playing Lobo onscreen. “‘So Lobo was…I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’ he said. ‘I mean listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. Gunn saw Momoa’s post and commented, “Welcome, my friend,” with a motorcycle emoji, as the buff actor is known for his love for motorcycles. The Dune actor even starred in HBO Max’s On the Road, a docuseries following Momoa’s travel across the country on his motorcycle as he chases art, adventure, and friendship through craftsmanship.

It wasn’t the only thing Gunn did to welcome Momoa to DCU. He also shared Lobo’s artwork on X, formerly Twitter. Following Gunn’s post, many fans shared their work of art featuring Momoa as Lobo. It’s undeniable that the former Aquaman perfectly fits the role. Momoa’s previous comment about Lobo was made during an interview with Fandango in 2023. The interviewer mentioned that he had been “eyeing that character for a while,” and Momoa confessed he thought he would portray Lobo when he joined DCEU.

The actor said he auditioned for Batman, but he knew the role wasn’t for him, so when he was called and asked about the role he was to play after getting a call, he assumed it would be Lobo. “Anyways, I got called in the office and I was just like, well, ‘do you know who you’re gonna play?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, Lobo. Yeah, of course, he’s the only one that can fight Batman and Superman,‘ and he’s like, ‘What, Lobo?’ I’m like, “No, he’s not in this universe?” I was like, “What? Who the hell am I supposed to play?” Apparently, he was cast as Aquaman.

Momoa had seemingly manifested his dream role and there was no doubt that he was born to portray the character. Momoa’s physique and looks are perfect for Lobo, a hulking intergalactic bounty hunter with a rugged and wild aesthetic. Lobo’s signature style includes his long hair, gritty appearance, and black, leather-clad, rebellious vibe. Momoa exudes a certain charisma that makes him lovable despite his previous roles mirroring Lobo’s irreverent persona.

The A Minecraft Movie star has embraced offbeat and eccentric characters that channel Lobo’s rebellious persona, like the unpredictable and chaotic Dante Reyes he portrayed in Fast X. Momoa is also a versatile actor who has a history of playing anti-heroes like Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, so there is no doubt he could pull off Lobo.
