Helldivers 2 recently embarked on its newest chapter by introducing the long-awaited Illuminate enemy faction. Terminids and Automatons haven’t been abandoned at all, and yet the Illuminate will purportedly be where the live-service PvE shooter will place its attention for at least the foreseeable future while it’s fresh in the sequel. Maneuvering Illuminate maps in Helldivers 2 is only slightly unique compared to Terminid and Automaton maps, but there’s one obvious landmark on many of them that are highly distinct and hopefully tease what could potentially become far greater later on.
Illuminate planets players descend onto for larger-scale missions such as Free Colony, Evacuate Colonists, or Retrieve Recon Craft Intel all feature slices of futuristic civilization. Concrete buildings, let alone isolated, walled-off urban environments at all, distinguish these planets and ordinary cars lining paved streets remind players who they’re fighting for when they endeavor to extinguish Helldivers 2’s Illuminate threat. Assuming that cities on Super Earth are anything like the truncated ones on Illuminate systems, it would be phenomenal if Helldivers 2 could eventually translate this city design to the Federation of Super Earth’s idyllic megalopolis.

Helldivers 2 Needs to Take the Fight to Super Earth Eventually
Players have been blindly and happily defending Super Earth since Helldivers 2’s launch. In any corner of the Galactic War, players’ liberation efforts have staved off enemy invasions and prevented factions from inching their way closer to Super Earth in the galaxy’s nebulous.
Super Earth advertising and propaganda is strewn about in Helldivers 2 wherever players may look, whether that’s in the opening cinematic players can skip as they boot up the game or the screen above the Destroyer’s Patriotic Administration Center that intermittently airs broadcasts. However, while pedestrian cities are intriguing to see in Helldivers 2’s Illuminate maps, it would be a truly significant feat to see an expansion of cities on Super Earth.
Of course, such an expansion would also necessitate that enemies have broken through players’ defenses and Major Order accomplishments to wreak havoc on Humanity. As such, it would be exciting and climactic if Helldivers 2 tasked players with an impossible Major Order wherein failing it could result in any and all factions reaching Super Earth.
How Illuminate Map Cities Can Segue into Super Earth Cities
Having Super Earth planets as enormous as an ordinary Terminid-, Automaton-, or Illuminate-invaded planet might be too tall an order if there would need to be a shimmering city with skyscrapers filling them. That said, it would be neat if Super Earth planets were at least as small as Helldivers 2’s Eradicate or Defend Evacuation Site missions so that Humanity’s bastion could be represented.
It would seem bewildering if a tiny city landmark was never meant to precipitate a bigger expansion of that structure, and having that be on Super Earth could make for a wonderful limited-time event where players descend onto their home planet and see humans fleeing through crowded streets. Nothing could demonstrate a diver’s plight for democracy more, and it’d be highly refreshing after players have stormed and dominated countless barren planets up until now anyhow.
Only time will tell if urban cities become a prominent part of landscapes for specific planets, but the fact that they’ve debuted at all is a great sign insinuating that it won’t only be colonists who need saving. Indeed, colonists are who have become the Illuminate’s Voteless hordes, and it’d be spectacular to see such an invasion occur on Super Earth where the stakes couldn’t be higher and all hope is nearly lost.
