Not only did Pilestedt allude to Arrowhead Game Studios’ future projects, but the CCO also shared details about games that never came to fruition, giving players insight into what the company has been playing around with conceptually outside of Helldivers 2.

Released at the start of the year, Helldivers 2 is easily considered one of the biggest releases of 2024 for a number of reasons. Not only did the game’s combat provide fun, immersive elements for those used to third-person shooters, but Helldivers 2 made teamwork and communication a key part of the overall package. As such, Helldivers 2 has garnered a massive and dedicated community, one that isn’t afraid to speak out when it comes to Arrowhead’s more controversial decisions. However, fans recently got a peek behind the curtain of the game studio, with Johan Pilestedt sharing quite a bit of information about multiple projects, some of which were shelved and some which may actually see the light of day.

Helldivers 2’s automaton enemies are all euqally undemocratic, but not all equally dangerous when you rank them all together side by side.

Speaking to fans on Twitter, Pilestedt said that he is in the early stages of developing the studio’s next game. However, much like previous Helldivers 2 updates, fan feedback is welcomed when it comes to Arrowhead, with the CCO asking fans what they would like to see next. The post was shared minutes prior to the clock striking midnight on December 31, 2024, and received hundreds of replies from fans. One fan said they would like to see an on-rails aircraft game in the same vein as Star Fox, to which Pilestedt actually revealed Arrowhead had already conceptualized something similar to this concept. Titled “Eagles of Democracy,” this proposed game did not come to fruition, but the CCO did share a few images of this never-released title.

Helldivers 2 Team Lead Confirms Work on Next Game Has Begun

​​​​​​In response to another fan, Pilestedt revealed that Arrowhead had once developed a concept for a modernized take on the 1990s twin-stick shooter Smash TV. The CCO stated that the proposed project would have been a top-down reimagining of the classic arcade video game. Arrowhead’s first Helldivers game was also a top-down shooter, much different from the gameplay found within Helldivers 2.

Pilestedt did not specify why these concepts never materialized into anything concrete, but it is refreshing to see a studio head be so open about canceled or indefinitely shelved projects. Of course, Arrowhead Game Studios is still very busy supporting Helldivers 2, which recently dropped one of its biggest updates so far. Omens of Tyranny was released for Helldivers 2 in December, with a Killzone-inspired set of weapons and armor also dropping at the end of the year. Plenty more is in store for Helldivers 2 as fans enter 2025, with more customization options, enemy types, and environments likely set to join the game in the coming months.
