While Super Saiyan 3 is quite incredible for the fans to see, given that Super is set after Daima, fans are wondering as to why this transformation never showed up in that story, despite it now being canon.
Vegeta’s Growth Over The Years
Vegeta Gained Many Transformations Over The Years
Vegeta is one of the strongest Saiyan warriors that fans have seen in the story. In fact, his incredibly relentless nature and prideful attitude are what has amassed multiple fans for him over the years. Vegeta continues to train day and night in an attempt to not just surpass Goku, but also to better himself. When Vegeta first showed up in Dragon Ball, he had no idea that a Saiyan stronger than him could exist. But, once he got a taste of Goku’s strength, Vegeta continuously tried to better himself and surpass everyone else. This was even harder for him when he realized that Goku had become the Super Saiyan, and later on, a mysterious boy named Trunks had achieved this transformation as well.

Of course, Vegeta wasn’t left behind for long, and fans got to see him accomplish quite a lot in the story as well. Vegeta ended up becoming a Super Saiyan as well in the Android Saga, and later on, he even unlocked Super Saiyan 2. But, while Goku had gone to Super Saiyan 3 at the end of Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta never went on to unlock this transformation and was canonically one step behind Goku.
In Dragon Ball Super, things were different. While Goku had eventually become Super Saiyan God, Vegeta was initially still stuck with Super Saiyan 2. However, he then started training with Whis, and eventually unlocked Super Saiyan Blue. Vegeta and Goku had both acquired God Ki, and their power was absolutely impeccable as the series went on. Vegeta even got Blue Evolution, which was his answer to Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20, and of course, his strongest power, which was later revealed in the Dragon Ball Super manga, that is, Ultra Ego, was fascinating as well.
Clearly, Vegeta has continued to grow over the years, and he will do so as the story continues. But, one transformation that Vegeta never got in the original series was Super Saiyan 3. Finally, however, that has changed in the new anime.
Vegeta Unlocks Super Saiyan 3 In Dragon Ball Daima
Vegeta Surpassed His Limits With Super Saiyan 3
Vegeta finally unlocked Super Saiyan 3 in Dragon Ball Daima. This transformation saw him level up his Super Saiyan power greatly in the battle against Tamagami 2, and he absolutely obliterated him in battle. Nobody was expecting Vegeta to tap into the power of Super Saiyan 3. After all, this transformation was never utilized by him in Dragon Ball Z, and, more importantly, not in Super either. But, here, Vegeta clearly showcased the capability of using Super Saiyan 3 and he did so effortlessly. According to Bulma, Vegeta had been training relentlessly in order to gain this transformation, which means that she was actually aware of the fact that he possessed this power. Clearly, after witnessing Goku’s battle against Buu, Vegeta started training towards it and eventually went on to accomplish it.

Vegeta’s version of Super Saiyan 3 is slightly different from that of Goku and Gotenks. While these characters have their hair grow all the way down to their lower back, Vegeta’s case is different. His hair certainly does grow, and goes all the way down to his neck, but no more than that. It also becomes much spikier, and he loses his eyebrows, just as the others do as well. It is interesting to note that Vegeta’s Super Saiyan transformation is actually based on Toriyama’s original draft for this form. What this form looks like matters little. What is truly important is that Vegeta is now a user of Super Saiyan 3. That said, fans are wondering as to why he never utilized this transformation in Dragon Ball Super, and the answer to that question is quite intriguing.
Why Did Vegeta Never Use Super Saiyan 3 In DBS?
The Ki Drain Caused By Super Saiyan 3 Is Massive
As fans know, Vegeta never utilized Super Saiyan 3 in the Dragon Ball Super series. Unfortunately, there is no official explanation for why this was the case. But, fans can make up their own mind on this, and believe what makes the most sense. One reason why Vegeta could’ve never utilized Super Saiyan 3 could be because of the incredible Ki drain of this transformation. There cannot be any doubts about the fact that Super Saiyan 3 is absolutely majestic. The power it offers is tremendous, it far surpasses Super Saiyan 2 in just about every way. However, Super Saiyan 3 does have its drawbacks as well. The strain it puts on the body of the user and the rate at which it drains Ki is tremendous. This form cannot be utilized for long, and even Goku admitted to that once he used it in his mortal body. He couldn’t maintain this transformation for long in the battle against Buu, and that was essentially one of the reasons why they were actually going to lose. It is entirely possible that Vegeta does not like using this transformation because of the massive Ki drain, and the fact that it is detrimental to use in a dragged-out battle.
Only a failure abandons his principles and pride! – Vegeta
But, then, the question arises as to why Vegeta never used this transformation against Beerus, especially when he slapped Bulma. Vegeta, at the time, went Super Saiyan 2 and started attacking the God of Destruction. Clearly, Vegeta should have brought out his full power, that is, Super Saiyan 3, and then attacked Beerus to stand a better chance of doing damage to him. Unfortunately, that was never the case. Fans can go on to make various headcanons about why that is the case, but the true reason is quite simple. It is simply that Vegeta was never intended to get Super Saiyan 3 at that point.
When Dragon Ball Super was written, the idea of Vegeta having Super Saiyan 3 did not exist and that is why he never used this transformation. Essentially, Vegeta gaining this transformation now is a new twist to the plot. It is cool and that goes without saying, but it does raise many questions about Vegeta’s character writing in Dragon Ball Super, and fans simply have to live with that. It doesn’t break Vegeta’s character, which means that the repercussions of this change in his transformations are not extreme, even if it’s questionable. What fans can take away from this is simply the fact that Vegeta is now much cooler than before.
