What a year for gaming it’s been. And what a year for thegaming over at TheGamer it’s been. You button mashers and thumbstick flickers visited TheGamer a whole bunch this year, and we love you for it. To show our appreciation, we’ve decided to join in on the trend that only works for Spotify and maybe Letterboxd and yet every other app in your life decides to do by bringing you the biggest stats of the year.
Check out some of the stories you read the most in 2024, and see if you can guess which Game of the Year nominee generated the most interest from TheGamer’s adoring fans this year.

How To Unlock Every Zombies Mastery Combo In Black Ops 6
Call of Duty has long replaced Mario as the video game non-gamers think of when they hear the word ‘video game’. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Being at the epicentre of the court case concerning the Activision Blizzard acquisition, the teething problems through the shift into Warzone, and the fear the series was growing stale made Call of Duty’s position at The Video Game precarious.
Black Ops 6 has been hailed as a much needed return to form, and a big part of that is how much fun it is to kill things that are already dead.
In July, Your Mood Was Double Chunk Skibidi Rizz
In a move that had scientists everywhere stunned, the summer break for schools corresponded with a rise in traffic for Roblox and Fortnite. It was also the month a Skibidi Toilet movie was announced.

Thanks, Xbox, I’m Never Subscribing To Game Pass Again
Game Pass lost some of its lustre this year as Xbox mixed up the tiers in a way that seemed designed to make it worse value for money. Worse, it did this against a background of selling off exclusive flagships to other consoles and shutting down teams like the one behind Hi-Fi Rush. That meant Xbox’s once industry-leading business model had taken a lend of players one too many times, and some walked away.
The comments were all reasonable and showed excellent reading comprehension having carefully considered the overall point the article was making about Microsoft’s lack of fairness to its loyal customers, not to mention its developers.
Second top was PC Gaming Now Looks Cheaper And More Convenient Than Consoles, which was about the PS5 Pro. We all really fell out of love with consoles this year, huh?
Most Popular Game Of The Year Nominee
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Even up against Elden Ring’s expansion, Final Fantasy is easily the most iconic of the six nominees this year, with a fresh faced PlayStation mascot, loose literary adaptation, and two new IPs also in the running. Add in the massive open world and roughly 2.7 million minigames (I counted), it’s no surprise that everyone wanted to read about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The most read article on Cloud’s escapades though was the confirmation of a canon romance with Tifa. I want it noted for the record that I reject this reality and will continue to love Aerith dearly.

The Best Breed Combos In Palworld
For one brief week, Palworld was the biggest game in the world. Its small studio, inexperience with global popularity, and small matter of being sued by Nintendo and Pokemon have made for a rocky trail beneath the game’s roadmap, but few games capture the spirit of 2024 (starting strong, promising a lot, ultimately fading away after a body blow from Nintendo) like Palworld.

753,262 Of You Still Cared About Baldur’s Gate 3’s Owlbear
This was our biggest guide of 2023, when Baldur’s Gate 3 was king of the universe. All things must end, but 753,262 of you were still looking for that evasive (and incredibly cute) camp companion this year. 11,164 of you had to settle for Shovel. I bet at least two of those searches came from The Vatican.

Helldivers 2 Players Lose Super Earth, Nothing Happens
Few games may capture 2024 like Palworld, but Helldivers 2 is one of those few. A refreshing multiplayer experience in a year that suffered through Suicide Squad and Concord, what was most interesting as an outsider was often it let us peek behind the curtain. It personified its ‘game master’, gave players control over the narrative direction, and played into the satire of the story by blending when it talked to players as if they were players sitting at home on the couch and when it gave orders as if they were real child soldiers in humanity’s army. Maybe this anticlimax was an ironic masterstroke.

Monopoly GO Free Dice Rolls
It’s like a live-service, mobile, single player Monopoly? You know what, don’t explain it. If you’re happy, I’m happy. I hope you got the best hotel or whatever the objective is in this game.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road
This surprised me too. A lot of people think reviews are the things everyone reads at websites (and also call everything ever published a ‘review’, which may explain the confusion), but the numbers tend to show that’s not true. In a damning indictment of the industry, the top four articles featuring ‘Review’ were actually news stories on Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and The First Descendant being review bombed for various reasons.

We obviously don’t have that. Why does Spotify have it? Why do I need to hear robots talk about the fact I listened to Sabrina Carpenter this summer?
