State of Decay 3 is Spoiled for Choice For Base-Building Inspiration

State of Decay 3 has been on the radar of many fans of the zombie survival genre, and while the wait continues, there are a lot of questions about how it has improved compared to its predecessor. Since the beginning of the franchise, State of Decay has become one of gaming’s top zombie series, and State of Decay 3 promises to bring another chapter to life. It’s currently unclear when State of Decay 3 will be ready, but when it finally launches, it will hopefully expand on its base building.

When it comes to open world survival games, base building has become a standard feature. Base-building in State of Decay was by no means a first for the zombie genre, but its simpler approach to base-building has made it a standout series in an industry overflowing with zombie-focused titles. The franchise’s base-building is less daunting than other survival games, and while this is a likely route for the third entry to go, it can also gain inspiration from recent titles that have launched since 2018’s State of Decay 2.

State of Decay 3’s latest trailer didn’t feature one thing shown previously that could prove decisive regarding the game’s future.

State of Decay 3 Has a Treasure Trove of Titles to Gain Base Building Inspiration From

  • Valheim
  • Starfield
  • Palworld
  • Sons of the Forest
  • Cult of the Lamb
  • Fallout 76
  • Grounded

The above list is just a small portion of games that have been released since State of Decay 2 that boast base-building mechanics, but these titles are some of the most notable. Games like Valheim, Starfield, Fallout 76, and Sons of the Forest have a bit of a learning curve, while Grounded can be considered difficult because of the slow pace of gathering materials. Palworld‘s base building is one of the game’s low points, but once fine-tuned, it could be a promising feature. Cult of the Lamb, on the other hand, has one of the most beginner-friendly base building systems in recent memory, but these mechanics bring something special to all of their respective games.

Base building in State of Decay may be less intricate than other survival games, but it still presents a solid challenge. If developer Undead Labs wanted to bring an even greater complexity to State of Decay 3, though, there are plenty of base-building sources to draw from. 2025 is filled with zombie-based releases, and the State of Decay franchise’s embrace of more survival-focused gameplay compared to a lot of other similar titles gives it an exciting edge.

State of Decay 3 was originally made official back in 2020 at the Xbox Games Showcase.

While the next entry could simply opt for making minor improvements to its own building system, it’s possible that Undead Labs has experimented with some new features that its team has enjoyed from other games. Keeping base building pretty much the same would be a safe move, but it could also run the risk of feeling disappointed for those who were wishing for something that feels fresh.

Fans May Have to Wait Longer for State of Decay 3

According to a recent rumor from Jez Corden in a recent episode of the XB2 podcast, State of Decay 3 may be facing a significant delay. While this has yet to be confirmed by both Undead Labs and Microsoft, the game possibly being delayed until early 2026 would be a bummer for a lot of eager fans. These claims should be taken lightly, though, as nothing is official until the game’s developer or publisher confirms such statements.

While State of Decay 3 has yet to reveal a release window, many are hoping for 2025.

The wait for an official State of Decay 3 release date continues, but there will hopefully be more insight given into the game’s building mechanics in the coming months. Much of the game still remains a mystery, but early sneak peeks promise another sweat-inducing story of survival. Additionally, even if there is a delay, it would mean that Undead Labs has all the time it needs to flesh out the game’s base-building, hopefully learning from other titles released over the last few years.
