Amy Was Considered For Sonic 2 And 3
The writers changed their minds because they didn’t want her to just be a side character
Speaking to ScreenRant, writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey shed some light on the decision to bring Amy into the series.
“I think maybe Amy came up for a brief moment on 2, just where you’re blue sky [ideating], ‘What are all the things that could happen?’,” says Miller. “It’s kind of been the same story with all the sequels.”
However, he then explains why the team didn’t include her in this smaller role in the end: “You don’t want to do Amy dirty by having her show up and kind of barely be in the movie.”
Ultimately, this is why she didn’t make the cut in Sonic 3. “[…] there was just too much going on already, and we didn’t want to give her a short shrift,” says Casey. “We didn’t want to crowd Shadow out, but we also knew that there are a lot of fans who would love to see Amy, like girl fans, in particular. I’ve got little nieces, ever since they discovered Amy existed, they’ve been asking me where Amy is.”
So, they’re very aware that there are a lot of fans who are eagerly awaiting Amy’s inclusion, and want to see her done justice. With this in mind, it very much seems like she’ll be a major character in Sonic 4.
Sonic 4 is set to hit cinemas sometime in 2027, having been confirmed just before Sonic 3’s release.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues the adventures of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and teases the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog.
