The alternative art Umbreon VMAX card was selling for an average of $538 during the first week of 2024. Fast forward to the end of the year and it’ll now cost you roughly $1,400 to buy one. Quite the price jump, and it’s not entirely clear why its value has gone up so much, particularly during the final quarter of the year. The reveal of Prismatic Evolutions, an upcoming set with Eevee at its center and a new Umbreon card could be partly to blame, its reveal and the most recent spike in the card’s price coinciding.

Other Pokemon cards that have shot up in value this year include the beautiful Latios & Latias GX which crept over $1,000 at the end of November, and Paldea Evolved’s Magikarp Illustration Rare which has gone from $67 in value to $202 over the course of the year. However, one card’s value worth tracking that isn’t featured in TCGplayer’s top ten is the infamous Van Gogh Pikachu.

Officially dubbed Pikachu With Grey Felt Hat, even though its value dropped at the end of February when Pokemon printed the card en masse. However, in September, Van Gogh Pikachu’s value started to rise again, and fast. Here we are on the final day of the year and not only is the promotional card worth almost double what it was this time last year, but its value is almost three times what it was when Pokemon made it more widely available in February.

Particularly good news for owners of the Pikachu card since it was a free gift when buying select products at the Pokemon Center. One of the more controversial cards released in recent years as news it would be handed out at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in 2023 resulted in a small-scale riot that ended with some of the museum’s staff losing their jobs.
