Summary
- A Marvel Rivals player has presented evidence suggesting Netease is filling losing players’ lobbies with bots.
- It’s believed if you lose two matches in a row, the next match will be against a team entirely made up of bots.
- The bots appear to be restricted to quickplay matches with no evidence of them showing up in competitive.
With 20 million of you having at least given it a go during its first month, there’s no doubting Marvel Rivals has been a live service hit thus far. The real test for Netease will be how many of those millions it can keep engaged for the long haul. There are various ways in which other live service games do that, one of them being filling select lobbies with bots, and there appears to be evidence suggesting that’s already happening in Rivals.
Rumblings that certain matches might be more bot than human began with a post shared on the Marvel Rivals subreddit by ciaranxy. After studying who, or what, exactly the lobbies are filled with for a week, the Rivals player believes they’ve confirmed that not only are there bots in certain matches, but if you lose two quickplay matches in a row, the odds of your next match being made up of more bots than humans is incredibly high.

After losing two matches in a row, ciaranxy claims you will likely be placed on a team with three other human players and two bots, and you’ll be up against a team made up entirely of bots. You’ll be able to tell if you’re in one of these matches as all the bots will be level one, and their access will be listed as restricted rather than limited like it is for regular players.
A Marvel Rivals Player Has Presented Evidence Suggesting Select Lobbies Are Filled With Bots
If You Don’t Want To Play With Them, Just Keep Winning. Easy.
Before you try to leave a bot-filled lobby should you happen upon one, just like any other Rivals match, you will be penalized for leaving without good reason. On the bright side, ciaranxy’s findings suggest Rivals’ competitive matches are free of bots. They’re only appearing in quickplay matches, and they’re not popping up until you lose at least two matches in a row, seemingly because Netease believes you need the help.
Since Rivals has so many players that it doesn’t need bots to fill lobbies, the leading theory for its supposed bot use is to make sure people keep playing. Nothing will turn someone off a live service game like losing a few matches in a row, making them feel like they’re not good enough to commit more time to it.
Give a losing player some bots to run through and all of a sudden, they’re enjoying themselves again, stick around to play more, and will potentially spend money in the free game. However, if there are bots, players are now wise to it, and replies to the findings shared on Reddit suggest a lot of people aren’t happy about it.
