You can’t be Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee in real life but Sifu provides a glimpse into what wielding that level of martial arts skill would be like. It’s a satisfying kung fu beat ’em up with some roguelike elements that offers plenty of difficulty for those looking for a challenge, and it’s free for the next 24 hours.
One of the best action games of 2022, Sifu offers a classic story of revenge through violence. A young boy watches his family get murdered, only be dedicate himself to avenging through death. Disciplined, determined and absolutely lethal, he eventually takes the fight to the ones that took away everything.
Listen, it’s a plot that works, creating an engine for you to unleash an array of punches and kicks towards anyone who stands in your way. There are many henchmen to be put down in the roguelike game, and put them down you do, usually in ballet-like fashion.
On lower difficulties, it’s quite literally like playing through an Ong-Bak sequel. Timing is everything and once you figure out the flow, you’re through one encounter and onto the next, kicking every bit of ass along the way.
If you’re hounding for something harder, dialing the difficulty up provides a whole other experience, requiring real precision in each bout. It’s tricky, almost deceptively so compared to playing on easy, but if you’re a real fan of kung fu, that might be where you’ll find Sifu the most rewarding.
There have been a number of updates since launch as well. One nifty feature is a replay editor that lets you turn your attempts into short films, something that really tickles the wannabe filmmaker in me. More levels and outfits have been added, too, making it an even more well-rounded project.
