One The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask player detailed how they managed to win at the Doggy Racetrack using the blue dog, an event so improbable it took over 30,000 attempts to accomplish. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is considered by many to be one of the best games in the franchise, due to its experimental creation that was built off the back of Ocarina of Time. This can be seen with its unique three-day mechanic in which players have to loop time around.

There’s also a plethora of mini-games in Majora’s Mask, providing the player with extra heart pieces or rupees, just like in Ocarina of Time. One particularly infamous luck-based mini-game that can be found at Majora’s Mask‘s Romani Ranch is the Doggy Racetrack, hosted by Mamamu Yan. Players can bet on any dog in a race in order to get more rupees or break even. Despite some players choosing to utilize some glitches to guarantee a win, the game is typically luck-based. Betting on the blue dog is often seen as the worst choice, as many claim it’s impossible for that specific dog to win.

A Zelda: Majora’s Mask fan discovers a scrapped feature for the game that takes advantage of a rarely used Nintendo 64 accessory.

In a recent video by Vidya James, the player broke down how he and another YouTuber, falkush, managed to snag a victory by using the blue pup. At Majora’s Mask doggy racetrack, there are many white, gray, beige, brown, and gold dogs that players can bet on, each with their own built-in base speed values, with gold having the best chances of winning. The solitary blue dog has the lowest, outclassed at a 4.0, while the others have 5.0, 5.5, or in the gold dog’s case, 6.0. In order for the blue dog to win, the users initially wanted to abuse an incredibly rare glitch to end the race early.

Breaking Down Blue Dog’s Unlikely Victory in Majora’s Mask

The first blue dog victory was achieved by creating a script to automatically repeat the racing mini-game in an emulator, which, after three days and over 8,000 attempts, saw the underdog manage to win the racing mini-game for seemingly the first time ever. However, falkush wanted to see if the blue dog could get first place without using a glitch. Falkush then altered his script to check for instances in which the dogs all had certain conditions that would alter their base stats, looking for the blue dog to be in the best condition while the others had the worst ones to maximize the weakest character’s chances of winning.

After a full week of attempts, the blue dog managed to score its first legitimate second-place victory, followed by two more silver medals. After 30,000 attempts from falkush, he then recorded the dog taking home first place, glitchless. Many video game dog fans were extremely happy to see the blue underdog manage to do the impossible almost 25 years after the game’s initial release.
