Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game of 2023, managing to beat out the likes of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for the top spot. Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, it’s only natural for Warner Bros. to want to capitalize on this success as quickly as possible, and that would mean producing a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy.
But if a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is indeed on the cards, it shouldn’t rest on its laurels, but instead use the opportunity to make some significant changes that benefit the sequel. For instance, to keep the same general formula fresh and exciting, a Hogwarts Legacy sequel might want to introduce a new protagonist, and in the process it could check two items off players’ wish lists in one fell swoop.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 is on the way, and while fans are excited to get their hands on it, its rumored direction may put it at odds with what they wanted.
How Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Kill Two Birds With One Stone With Its Protagonist
A New Protagonist Could Shake Up Hogwarts Legacy’s Formula
The first Hogwarts Legacy took around 25–30 hours to beat, and around 70 hours to reach 100% completion. Many fans finished Hogwarts Legacy‘s main story, and many die-hard fans made sure to complete everything the game had to offer. That means the majority of fans have spent over 25 hours in Hogwarts Legacy‘s world already, and those same fans aren’t going to want to explore the same exact location all over again in the sequel.
If Hogwarts Legacy 2 featured an all-new protagonist, it would pave the way for some significant changes in the game’s world and side activities. For instance, a new protagonist could allow Hogwarts Legacy 2 to be set in a completely different century, presenting the player with a slightly different iteration of Hogwarts Castle and its surrounding area.
A change in protagonist and time setting would also allow a Hogwarts Legacy sequel to present the player with an all-new cast of characters. From professors to antagonists to companions, Hogwarts Legacy 2 could introduce a wealth of new relationships and a set of unique quests to go alongside them.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 could still pay homage to the first game’s protagonist by carrying over the player’s save file and using it to represent the original player-character in a portrait or as one of Hogwarts’ professors.
A New Protagonist Could Deliver One Long-Requested Harry Potter Location
Regardless of whether Hogwarts Legacy 2’s hypothetical new protagonist is a first-year or older, the game could begin with them needing to purchase school supplies. That opening quest would allow Hogwarts Legacy 2 to deliver a long-requested fan-favorite location: Diagon Alley.
Located behind the Leaky Cauldron pub in central London, Diagon Alley is one of the busiest shopping districts in the Wizarding World. In the first two Harry Potter movies, the eponymous Boy-Who-Lived ventures to Diagon Alley to purchase a wand, an owl, and an assortment of potion-craft utensils. Harry also visits Gringotts Bank, where his family’s small fortune is located. While Hogwarts Legacy‘s Hogsmeade did a good job of echoing a lot of the same vibes as Diagon Alley, it would be fun to experience the real deal in a sequel, and a new protagonist would be the perfect excuse to do so.
