Martyn Brown, a video games industry veteran responsible for co-founding Team17, has passed away at 57 years old, his family reports. Brown is survived by his children Jack and Harry, his stepdaughter Darcy and wife Heather.
In a statement, Jack Brown revealed a cause of death, along with some heartfelt information:
“Martyn passed away peacefully in his sleep at 8:17am, 28th of December, 2024, surrounded by family, following a prolonged battle with a series of strokes. Know that he went out on his own terms listening to his favourite music and surrounded by loved ones.”
Brown is most famous for his time with Team17, a studio he helped co-found all the way back in 1990. At Team17, Brown and his coworkers were responsible for producing both Alien Breed and Worms, among other titles. Team17 also had a hand in publishing emerging titles, including Super Stardust.
According to a GamesIndustry.biz obituary, Brown helped form a consultancy group, Insight For Hire, as well as providing support for other studios. Those studios include Double Eleven, Exient and New Star Games. Additionally, he helped form the North of England networking group, Game Republic.

Tributes To Martyn Shared Online
In the wake of his death, several tributes began piling in.
“Martyn brought humour, warmth, down-to-earth (sometimes brutal) advice and camaraderie wherever he went,” Cooperative Innovations CEO Simon Barratt shared. “Martyn’s impact through Team17, Insight For Hire, Blast Furnace, and New Star Games, as well as his contribution to Game Republic, is legendary, but it’s the person that really made life just that bit more fun.”
According to a November tweet, Brown was recognized with an “Industry Legend” award at a Game Republic event. It appears he was on hand to accept the award, marking one of his last appearances.
