Sonic 3 Beats Mufasa At The Box Office Again Despite Disney’s Claims

Sonic 3 Beats Mufasa At The Box Office Again Despite Disney's Claims

Summary

  • Disney seems to be seriously massaging Mufasa’s box office numbers to make it seem like it’s outperforming Sonic 3.
  • A community note has been attached to a post trying to claim Mufasa beat Sonic 3 at the US box office last week.
  • This comes a week after Disney started hiding replies from Sonic fans to a similar tweet about week one’s numbers.

Like it or not, when two blockbusters are released in cinemas on the same weekend, people are going to compare how they perform at the box office. The latest, and perhaps most fierce, example of that is Sonic 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King both hitting theaters the weekend before Christmas. Disney massaged its numbers on launch weekend to make it look like it outperformed the Blue Blur, and in week two, the studio has been accused of outright lying about its figures.

Disney claimed Mufasa was the number one movie at the box office last week which sparked a war of words so lively that it started hiding replies from Sonic fans claiming that wasn’t true. The truth was more complicated as even though Mufasa topped the worldwide box office, Sonic 3 was number one in the US. Sonic fans also noted that Mufasa had been released in a lot more markets than Sonic 3 at the time.

Disney has returned with another claim following round two between the hedgehog and the lion, this time claiming it’s still number one in the world but also number one in the US. The thing is, as highlighted in the community note now attached to the tweet, it’s unclear where exactly Disney is getting those numbers from.

Disney Is Making Box Office Claims It Can’t Back Up Again

Just Let Sonic Rule America And Mufasa Can Have The Rest Of The World

community noted disney tweet refuting claim it beat sonic 3 at the box office.

After two weeks, Sonic 3 has made $138 million at the US box office while Mufasa continues to lag behind on $113 million. Not only does that mean Sonic 3 is still number one, but despite an improved week domestically for Disney’s latest live-action hit, it lost by the narrowest of margins to Sonic 3 for the second week in a row. Disney fans have been bending over backwards to try and figure out how exactly the numbers have been framed for the studio to make such a declarative statement, but every time they do, Twitter’s community notes team explain why they’re still wrong.

Either there’s an odd way Disney has framed the numbers internally so that Mufasa was somehow the number one movie in America over seven days, it’s mistaken, or it’s lying. Whatever the case, and I’d hazard to guess it’s the first, it’s unclear why Disney wouldn’t just stick to the worldwide numbers. Mufasa is trouncing Sonic 3 on a global scale, raking in $327 million during its first two weeks compared to Sonic’s $211 million. Just stick to boasting about those far more impressive numbers and save all this needed embarrassment.
