PlayStation Has Sold Around Two Million Portals

PlayStation Has Sold Around Two Million Portals

Summary

  • A breakdown of how people use the PlayStation Portal has provided a rough estimate of how many have been sold.
  • Around three percent of PS5 owners have bought a Portal which equates to about two million devices.
  • Pretty good for a device that was labeled useless by many when first revealed in 2023.

When PlayStation revealed the Portal, a handheld device that, up until recently, only functioned when tethered to a PS5, many of you laughed it out of the virtual building before it had even been released. 12 months later, turns out it wasn’t such a bad idea after all as even though official sales numbers haven’t been revealed, a breakdown of the Portal‘s usage has confirmed around two million of them have been sold.

Game File’s Stephen Totilo provided details about who has been buying the Portal and when exactly they use it most. One of the biggest takeaways was that Portal users are most active at 9 pm, suggesting that’s when they’re handing over control of the TV to other family members but don’t want to stop gaming.

More Sources Confirm That A PlayStation Handheld Console Is In Development

Multiple sources are now saying that a PlayStation portable is in the works, which would play games natively.

However, tucked away in Totilo’s report after the reveal that Portal usage peaks around 9 pm is a note confirming roughly three percent of those with a PS5 have picked up a Portal. PlayStation hasn’t shared any information pertaining to how many people have bought a Portal which, considering how quickly the device sells out whenever it’s restocked, seems a little odd.

PlayStation Has Sold Roughly Two Million Portals So Far

Pretty Good For Something So Many People Scoffed At

We do know how many PS5s have been sold to date though, and that means we can estimate how well the Portal has sold during its first year. At last count, the PS5 had sold 65.6 million units. Three percent of that impressive total equates to slightly less than two million. 1.968 million to be exact, but since the three percent figure isn’t exact, it’s probably best to leave it at roughly two million until PlayStation either confirms or denies otherwise.

Since you no longer need a PS5 for a Portal to function, it’s probably fair to round that figure up to two million and beyond as those without a console from which to stream might now own PlayStation’s newest handheld device. The options are still very limited, though. Even though you can now stream games through the Portal, you need to be subscribed to PS Plus Premium, and the library of games available is currently limited to 120, all of which are on PS5 with older games remaining unavailable.

There’s a rumor that the Portal will be released in black soon, but it was missing from a more recent leak suggesting other PlayStation accessories will be getting black variants soon. So far the device has only been available in white and PS1 grey, the latter being a limited edition version for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary that sold out almost immediately.
